If purchasing doesn't give you ownership...
then piracy isn't theft.

I also hope this is will lead to other pro consumer laws.
and i don’t see a future where it pivots back to how it used to be. What I’m saying though is Steam doing right by getting ahead of the new laws.
By the same token most software itself licenses components from other parties that the developers do not own in perpetuity (e.g. a pre-SaaS version of Photoshop contains a library whose license expired a few years back and it's technically not legal to continue using).
How are schools and your parents failing you this badly
If it's a Valve developed game, they can absolutely sell licenses of it and legally promise that it will last forever.
Even games they don't have the license to SELL, you can still download if you purchased a copy.
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is an example of this.
Just gonna be more struggles of keeping what you purchased with your own hard earned money folks
Nah kidding.
You don't own much though, if anything.
But it doesn't mean its legal: It is copyright infringement, a completely different crime.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Game preservation is important!

But because they force it, they feel they can say "we put too much stuff in the firmware and now the old speakers can't handle it. Tough".
“Yeah no. A reasonable person would expect XX years out of the product at its advertised functionality given its price. Refund or replace thanks or we’ll see you in small claims court”
Consider what's happening (and not happening) right now in flip-phone game preservation.
Those games are still unavailable for purchase officially, and second-hand physical copies have skyrocketed in price.
Can I download and play it now?
No I can not.
Even physical media is susceptible to disc rot.
Not a single Quake disc I bought is readable anymore.
And with GoG you own it, you can just download the installer and it's yours.
You "take" my software....you'll never see another cent from me. I bought the license, and if it was to "own" not subscription, I'll get it any way I see fit.
If you want to accuse me of theft then kindly go fuck yourself first.
Try me.
Just putting that out there
