Mosby famously wrote: "I've always understood that we went to war on account of the thing we quarreled with the North about. I've never heard of any other cause than slavery." and was pushing back against Lost Cause revisionism as late as 1907. What in the goddamn.
Even when revising his own past to say that he had always been against slavery (he was a slaveowner), Mosby's only justification for military service was that he was a Virginian and Virginia had decided to go to war. This is impressively wrong.
