This, by the way, is one reason (there are other reasons) why I'm not so sure that a public school system does anything at all to promote democracy and rule of law. I had some very good teachers in elementary school, but not all of my teachers were uniformly good in the way the best teachers were.

In 3d grade, we had a subst teach one day. The lesson was astronomy - something I already used a telescope for w/Dad and was excited. She put up the constellation Orion. I raised my hand, “That’s Orion 😊” (as in, Ore-EYE-un). She said, It’s pronounced “ORE-ee-un”. She wuz wrong. Haven’t forgotten.🧐

I had a 9th grade health teacher who told our class that condoms don’t protect against AIDS. This was in the 80s, a particularly bad time to be glibly spreading disinformation. We argued and she gave us detention.

Cynthia and Ralph were both members of the community band I play in. Great people, although I am sad to report that Ralph passed away a few years ago.
