That's an interesting read. Thanks for sharing it. I'm an expat, so no eyes on the ground. I couldn't understand the disconnect between the reported numbers and voter sentiment, either. This puts things into perspective a bit.

I know there's still layers to it all, but yeah, I think at least there's some effort here to unpack the complexity of what people are experiencing. So many discussions of the economy feel really divorced from the reality of my region (tho the MAGA narrative is mendacious & delusional).

Like, it's not just "vibes." Housing is both scarce and expensive (renting or owning). Insuring that housing is getting increasingly costly. Health insurance premiums keep going up and care keeps getting worse. And wages are not keeping pace, esp if you are working the gig economy.

I live in a small rural town where vacancy rates are under 1%. But also it's one of the poorest counties in the state, so our property taxes are high & people still get taxed extra because it's the only way to repair the roads. And then everything else. I get why people feel squeezed.

Like, I'm sure you can still put all these models up against each other and find plenty to argue about, and I think the election showed all kinds of massive issues with our information economy but like...shit is hard out here for a lot of folks, for real, underneath the numbers.
