If no one else recognizes those territories as pupu’s, and if there’s enough force to keep his forces from these mass kidnappings, then perhaps this is just his twisted way of trying to negotiate no mass deportations of Russian nationals from Crimea when real peace comes. Security guarantees arise.

My grandfather used to say that Finland will have Karelia back as empty as it was when Russia took it (most of the people were relocated elsewhere in Finland before Russia took over). However, getting rid off Russians in Karelia would also be seen as ethnic cleansing. It would be... problematic.

Guess you could exclude Russians who settled there before the land was stolen from Finland. But if you don’t get them out and they don’t accept being assimilated into Finnish society then colonialism wins. Crimea is a prime example b/c Tatars were force migrated & replaced with 🇷🇺s.

Russia did the same with the Baltic countries: sent natives to Siberia and replaced them with ethnic Russians. When Soviet Union broke and Baltic countries regained their independence, they inherited large Russian populations, which came with variety of problems.

Yes, same with colonialism everywhere though 🇷🇺 lies through its teeth that they are not a colonial power. The longer colonizers remain, the harder it is to justify expelling them but they nearly always remain loyal to the empire - it becomes engrained in their identity & they use it like a pedestal.
