Wtf. I've had so many surgeries. The majority of time , they don't know til they get in how long it will take. Luckily they usually plan for longest time. I hope they make that adjustment for pre auth etc. Approve for longest time possible. Insurance companies are so awful.
Right??? Like, do they wake you back up, with your ribcage open and some clamped arteries to be all "Um, this is taking a bit longer than expected. We're going to need another copay and to run authorization again..."
Ethically I highly doubt Drs would discontinue anesthesia mid surgery. That would be a huge lawsuit. They'll make you sign paperwork stating that you'll be billed. And just another step to keep people poor in the country.
I can hear screaming in my head thinking about someone coming out of anesthesia because insurance won't cover the last 15 mins. God damn we live in fucked up times.
My guess is they are going to plan for the worst case scenario and demand payment up front anticipating a 72-hour surgery or something outlandish, and the people who can't afford to pay that will just not get the surgeries they need.
