I saw him right before this came out. I had just had a rough breakup of a four year relationship, and he played “Winsome Smile.” It was like he was talking to me and telling me just what I needed to hear. Very funny in retrospect.

I first heard of him back in ca. 07-08 when Origin of Species had a brief "mentioned-in-Rolling Stone" moment and I appreciated the snark as a holier than thou college intellectual type, but this is the song I return to over and over again.

Chris Smither is so good, I remember my mom playing his album "Don't It Drag On" in the car as a kid and being completely enraptured. Despite being a quintessential Dead song I always gravitated toward his version of "Friend of the Devil"
