Kia Niro has been great. You can grab one with 3 year warranty remaining for under 14k. Alternatively as a family car Skoda enyaq is starting to come into the second hand market circa 18k

What size?

Are you likely to do many longer drives (200+ miles), and if so, how far and how frequently?

If so, then range and recharging speed (max kW you can charge at) are key.

We needed a 2nd car back in 2019 primarily for my work driving,so we got a Zoe 40kwh, the 150 mile range was just right at the time and you couldn't get further for cheaper.Back then it was a tentative step knowing we had a petrol Jazz as our main car. Nowadays I don't think you need that reassuance

I drive a Renault Zoe ZE50 if I was to choose again now second hand I would probably go Kia e-Niro/Hyundai Kona 64 kWh with heat pump, MG5 or older Tesla Model 3.

The older Ioniq 38 kWh with shorter range and BMW i3 is also a good choice.

Our Hyundai Kona was a good price and has fab range - over 260 miles - ie I need to pee more often than it needs charging. It's lovely to drive, UI not bad for the modern age I don't think! However.. not been super reliable. A few issues probs made more of a pain b/c of poor service @ dealership.

Its also not that roomy. Fine for 2 adults travelling, but when we bring both (adult) children, luggage needs to be rationed. And definitely a squeeze when we add a 5th.

But as it's not a "big" car not offputting for small journeys/parking at the shop etc like I would find a great long estate. and of course far less marginal £/emissions guilt on a Tesco run, vs an ICE that also works for 4 adults on holiday.
