I try not to resort to "they do not get enough fresh air" as an argument but they clearly do not. I read the news. I talk to people. I read blogs. I read books. And sometimes I have online discussions, just not with ill-conducted jerks. If it's that important someone pleasant will tell me about it.
Those who crow the loudest about people retreating to their echo chambers are the bad actors who want targets for abuse. Where are all these meaningful exchanges we're missing supposedly happening?
People on BlueSky have a lot of differences but manage to make space for each other. I think it’s less an echo chamber and more of a place that embraces and respects diversity while rejecting disrespect, hatefulness, and other ugliness.
Trump has hogged so much oxygen from the media, TV, social, news. It seems we stopped talking to each other about what matters. As humans, we need social engagement, but it doesn't have to be about politics. If we could just talk, we might learn we are more than same than different.
Wanting everyone to be forced to listen to them without any risk of consequences or reciprocation is at the root of the online conservative. That said I still think they should be welcomed conditionally. The more this platform can pull people off twitter the better
let them stay on twitter as it becomes more and more toxic and degenerates into a screaming morass of infighting as they fail to gain a foothold on any other platform.
only thing about echo chambers that’s bad is that it leads you to think during election time your candidate will easily win. Some people like that though.
They just want to push everybody who disagrees out. I remember there was a video from the 60s of a young Rupert Murdoch saying there needs to be more diversity in the media when he was buying up newspapers. Of course, the "diversity" meant his own point of view. AND ONLY THAT.
The deal is they want everyone to listen to them, even to suspend all other business to listen to them full time, but they don't want to listen to anybody else.
Why do I keep seeing a conflation between racism and echo chambers? Echo chambers are a very real threat to social growth and understanding. With that being said, my tolerances are different from yours so our spaces will be different and no one should be forced to interact with hate.
Amazing how many people who shrug or nod gleefully about eliminating trans people, mass deportations, or universities with loyalty oaths want to fight "echo chambers".
I'm here only a week and already have seen folks trying to recreate the same air tight bubbles. The starter packs, while useful, are also a perfect trap to recreate the same cult followings. But thank god bsky has so many other features to find what's relevant. https://bsky.app/profile/shayan86.bsky.social/post/3larvrcnu5c25

And what's wrong with other people being different? That's pretty much the *definition* of other people.
Sometimes you are in the same space. Opportunity to learn something new, or free travel for the mind.
