Yup, it was Job Security and Stability that was the appeal. Plus a healthy amount of Doing The Right Thing/Serving the Public (which is corny but true) that lead to government service.

Without that? Good luck getting anyone to sign on.

Depends on the position and the job market. My husband has been in the Canadian civil service for 20some years. When market wages go down, he does much better than private sector. Right now, it's about even. But he has way better benefits and a union.

The best wages of my life were government job wages.
But my engineering colleagues were easily making $30K less than they could have been.

Arts/heritage folks almost always get better pay in government jobs, even at a municipal level, than the private sector, which is often not-for-profit. Veterinarians working for Depts. of Environment are there because they have a specific, wildlife and public service interests, not for the pay.

This is *especially* true for Intel agencies like NSA. Their is this pipeline of new hires to contractors because Congress won't allow a GS/DCIPS employee to make more than them (it's around 160k in the DC area). Contractors have no problem paying 200k to a PhD for cyber security with a clearance

So the only way they retain people is by offering things like good job stability, pensions, and remote work. Now that's coming to an end. They will complain internally to house intel committee and expect to see incentives like huge sign on bonuses in the coming years

I'm a public employee because 1) I like helping people, and 2) it feels morally wrong to me to generate profit from my labor, but non-profit organizations are too dysfunctional and exploitative of their employees.

And, I'm assuming here, as a Canadian: US government jobs have recently had structures to ensure that non-White, non-straight and disabled workers would be judged on their actual ability to do a job? Has been true (not perfect, obviously) for Canadian Fed. jobs, but province/Territory ones too.

Another thing they want to get rid of! Civil servant jobs also anchor small/medium-sized relatively rural communities: govvies can afford to buy stuff/eat out/drink in bars consistently. Sad to think a lot of that will just be going to private prison camp towns, going forward, in the US.

Exactly this. People don't get government jobs to get rich. They take contracting jobs to do that. You are definitely swapping income for stability - and to have government jobs be the worst of both worlds - you will recruit nobody.

In late 1997 I was offered triple my salary university as a mainframe DBA in Montréal to move to Texas for Y2K. Staying here was the second best decision I ever made. Didn’t get rich but have had a stable and fortunate life.

This is also one of the things that is so bonkers about the suggestions of widespread fraud. Govt workers are often taking less pay in those jobs because they believe in the mission and/or are risk averse and prefer stability to higher pay. Neither reason suggests a group likely to commit fraud.

This is exactly the point of the way they are doing this. The “put them in trauma” M.O. Even if government were to try to rebuild what it is losing after a change in power, this tainting of the waters serves as a practical right-wing check on anyone good returning to public service.
