OUT TODAY: How is the US electricity transition doing?
WIND+SOLAR OVER TOOK COAL: Wind and solar now at 17% of US electricity supply; coal falls to a record low of 15%.
Only 6 years ago in 2018, coal generation was x3 that of wind and solar🤯

Illinois was the latest to join the ranks in 2024, following Arizona, Colorado, Florida and Maryland in 2023.
Incredibly, 32% of California's annual electricity supply and 30% of Nevada was from solar. That's higher than any country in the world!
Yet 28 states generated less than 5% of their electricity from solar in 2024🌖
They completely change solar's profile - so that nearly a third of solar generation on some days goes into batteries.
During 2024, it actually installed more utility-scale batteries (+3.8GW) than solar panels (+2.5GW)😯
Gas generation still rose by 3.3%. But without increase in solar and wind growth, gas would have needed to rise by 9% to meet rising demand and coal’s small decline.
Virginia saw the largest rise in gas generation - and that was because it had one of the smallest rises in clean elec🤷♂️
California saw the biggest FALL in gas - because its clean growth outpaced demand🙂
