few things are more entertaining than seeing the "american" section of a grocery store somewhere else in the world and it's just 14 types of candy and jarred hot dogs. like yep, nailed it

I remember some time ago Lidl had an "American Week" here so all their stores had an aisle with burger buns, hot dog buns, Doritos and, admittedly, fucking amazing BBQ sauce.
And they had the hot dogs but it's a German store so they went "No! We're not putting our wursts in the American aisle! That stays where it was before!"
Oh, no. I'm not saying they don't have good stuff. Their Bulgarian products are just a single small step below a small artisanal shop (probably because there is a law that forces them to have Bulgarian products in their store, but...). Point is they have no idea how to market American stuff.
I love how much of them are barbeque sauces. Imagine living in Berlin and finally being able to get some Sweet Baby Ray's and just saluting in the aisle.
I like when i go to tesco and you can get normal poptarts in the cereal section, or go to the american section to get the toxic corn syrup explosion poptarts
yeah i took this a few years ago at a world market in connecticut. world market is a specialty store with lots of international items and their stuff is pretty marked up. these days though i hit up schaller & weber on the upper east side for german meats
Fair, even though I'm writing this from Somerville, MA, where we have an annual "Fluff Festival".
Also once witnessed British tourists at a Portland, ME convenience store getting an explanation from the cashier. "So you make a sandwich with this... and peanut butter?"
discovered it a few years ago and now i get the tiptree brand of blackcurrant preserve from a nearby british grocery store/pastry shop (they make their own cornish pasties, pork pies, import cumberland sausage, etc). great stuff!
It’s slightly strange how happy it makes me to read this. Probably because blackcurrant stuff is so common here that one of the most popular fruit juices I grew up with (Ribena) is that. Though it’s annoying the grocery delivery service I use doesn’t have blackcurrant cheesecake (the best combo).
It’s actually kind of crazy WHY Americans don’t know of have had it. It was banned in like early 1900 because it spread a blight that hurt the white pine tree
My friend who works in food industry said to me, if tariffs hit us hard. No problem not buying over expensive MrBeast chocolate bars and put those in our stores. It's just a perfect example what U.S. is actually selling.
One of the few swells of patriotic pride I’ve felt in recent memory was being in one of these “American 🇺🇸 “ shops in Porto and seeing this shit on the shelf.
We just have an "International" aisle here at Heinen's food store, and I swear to God, no fooling, I feel so happy when I walk down that aisle with the shopping cart.
Thanks tho gave me flashbacks to some GOOD TIMES working on a Weinstein Co film. We were lucky we shot on location the rapist only came to set one day, tho we feared him calling in.

yeah that's accurate. i live close to a grocer that specializes in world foods and our american section is mostly soda, popcorn, a bunch of hersheys and reeses products, and hot/bbq sauces.
it's the only section in the store where you can't make a whole meal out of the products sold in it.
From what I've heard from acquaintances, one of the biggest differences between the US and the EU it just the portion sizes. Also, everything 'American' style, which I am not sure is really American, has an obscene amount of sugar in it 🫡

Those "prime" liquids were trendy over here for a while too.
Their Brazil, Greek, and eastern Europe weeks tend to have stuff actually manufactured there.

KD (Kraft Mac Cheese)
KitKat bars
Check my profile my full real name is my header. HKD are my legal initials 🤣
But I almost had to make the joke.

But real American cooking kind of implies fresh meat & good flour. Maybe they have those in other sections?
The rest of the section was jack Daniels, chips, Oreos, and the candy collection
