Blue Cross Blue Shield in Connecticut, New York and Missouri has declared it will no longer pay for anesthesia for the full length of some surgeries.

It the procedure goes over a certain time, anesthesia will not be covered for the duration.

I was taught in the RVI in Newcastle that u put a patient in the table u stayed until they came off or someone relieved u but that s NHS staff for u

I’ve worked in anaesthesia for 40 years n no one ever has been able to predict the length of anaesthesia. I have seen many go over and many go so much under but then some drugs work for 20mns 30 mns 45 mns but until the surgeon is is no one knows how long is needed

Health care in USA is deeply messed up. Expensive and with lower life expectancy that all EU countries. Having said that, scaremongering about NHS reform leading to an American health care system isn’t helpful either. Denmark - as we might expect - leads the way and offers many useful lessons.

Nobody in their right mind would argue for a US style health care system in the UK, but Denmark has the best health care in EU with *some* insurance for co-pays etc.

Interesting thanks. Nb the vast majority of danish health care funded through taxation. Next chunk via copayment provided by single not for profit then topped up for some by commercial insurance. Ie most folk get most care by state funded service. Interesting to see what we might learn though.

Exactly. We can and should learn from Europe in health care and not be afraid to adjust our health care system along similar lines. That doesn’t mean going down the (mad) path the US has taken.

Here in Ireland. I broke my tibia 4 years ago. Had a world class surgeon and the best hospital care. Total cost 360 euros. Granted we have a world class system if you get access to it
