I have never heard someone from San Francisco call it that.

One could literally put just SF and at least 90% of the time, people will know what’s up.

I feel like Atlanta is a big enough city and abso-fragging-lutely a big enough airport that using ATL as shorthand is fine. Even people outside the U.S. would be likely to understand ATL.
