But sadly, when there are issues of an imbalance between supply and demand, the motivation on the supply side is unlikely to be focussed on the moral imperative, but instead the financial one. Resolving this is going to require significant investment and yet the focus has been on savings.

I totally understand the point that you are making, and agree that there absolutely has to be huge investment. The situation is beyond crisis point. I think I just felt a bit uneasy about that phrase.

Oh I agree, the investment I’m referring to is state led, not hedge/sovereign wealth fund led. An investment based on a social return not a fiscal one. That phrase captures so much of what is broken about the system currently.

Absolutely agree. When fees for NMIs have doubled in less than 5 years, some in as little as 2 to 3 and the quality of education is not always what one would expect it definitely needs addressing.

It does, but we need to be careful not to tar all NMI with the same brush. It also needs to be considered from the PoV of what maintained school top up fees should have increased by, as poor commissioning or poorly controlled increases should not be compensated for by bankrupting maintained schools.

Moving away from for-profit provision should be the aim, but it needs to be done extremely carefully, probably by rebalancing the supply of profit free placements so there is sufficient capacity to not need those type of places. However, what we can’t risk is a disorderly withdrawal from the market.

That, or LAs could be made directly responsible for AP. I can't help but notice that in London borough LEAs who have direct control of AP schools seem to have better outcomes with lower per pupil expenditure.
