The Trump admin canceled contracts with Maine's CDC supporting "enumeration at birth" -- the way 99% of American babies get their Social Security Numbers.

Now Maine parents have to visit field offices in-person to get their newborn SSNs

Why?

Yes, let's force parents to spend a day waiting in a crowded govt office to do something that was automatic a year ago.

The defining feature of any autocratic regime is inefficiency, bureaucracy, and worse outcomes for people. Never forget, it's the OPPOSITE of what they claim.

Back in the 80s I visited the then-USSR on a student cultural exchange. I remember how bureaucratic and inefficient it was. I'll never forget the state shops selling just 1 thing: a shop JUST selling canned tuna, every shelf with identical cans, same size, generic label. Nothing else. Bizarre.

In Moscow you'd see people waiting in huge long lines, like it was concert tickets but it was toilet paper. Or sometimes they didn't even know, you'd ask someone what are you waiting in line for and they'd shrug. "Dunno, but whatever it is, we'll need it."

Punishes the governor and gives them a chance to put eyes on the parents of newborns. Hear if they have an accent. It's a back door way to complicate birthright citizenship regardless of what a court says. A birth certificate but no SSN.
