Columbia Journalism Review tested eight generative AI search tools and found their answers were wrong 60% of the time, and the paid ones actually fared worse than the free ones.

The quality of AI has dropped significantly since 2023. User queries are fed back into the models and change the weightings in the neural nets. Most users prompts are mediocre at best, so AI has become a reflection of its user base. I find them unusable at this time.

The study's methodology is not how I use AI search. I don't pick an article and make it attempt to find that exact source, I give it a question and get an accurate answer.

Also they were unclear which specific settings were used with Perplexity Pro. I would like to see results with Reasoning and with Deep Research, as the models do a lot of self reflection in those modes and are therefore much more accurate.

Not all of it, but anyone that is using it to claim that it's a miracle is stupid.

AI is really good at analyzing real data for a company or medicine or efficiency in traffic patterns, etc. It can do it so much faster than a team of analysts that you can test things that weren't possible.

I didn't say AI was a sham. The industry hawking it mostly certainly is. AI as tech is a term so broad as to be almost meaningless. LLM's have use and have for years. Not the issue here tho.

This is why the study of languages, geography and history are as important as STEM. Anyone with a grasp of the humanities can immediately see through AI's bullshit whereas the engineering class think it's a miracle.
