Is avowed good? I like action RPGs, but am a dumb console ape who doesn’t want to have to play with a spreadsheet open to optimize my hectal flow or splorg ratios, I want to hit the bad men with swords and zaps.

You can switch to third person. The animations look a little janky and the item pickups are not as simple, but it’s how I play it and am loving it so far.
It started off as a Skyrim clone before pivoting into a small scale RPG so I imagine they made it first person because that's how most people played Skyrim.
It's much does not require a spreadsheet, it's mostly just "you get points to spend in some pretty clear stats or abilities" and focused on the combat/story.
However! The item system is not very clear, so to explain something it doesn't tutorialize well, you can combine basic crafting mats into
more advanced ones, and this is kind of advice about the system, unique items (gold glow) spawn at the rate of your highest equipped weapons when you open the chest, encounter them (unclear for ones lying around) or first talk to the shop owner, so don't find all of them and then figure out which to
upgade, just start upgrading whatever weapon you are using and you will effectively get those points applied to whatever future weird weapon you find that is cool.
(I ran around unupgraded for the whole first area and deeply regret and am behind the curve now, but oh well.)
Oh and armor is I think tracked separately? Unclear, since as I said I mostly found them all first, and have been trying to correct for that by keeping my stuff as upgraded as possible.
I am loving it so far the combat is light and fun, the environments are bright and gorgeous and not at all Generic High Fantasy. It reminds me of playing Morrowind for the first time as a young'un.

helps that it's been very very well received.
