what's in your view the best data-visualization technique/type of plot/chart? in terms of concisely conveying information effectively and aiding substantive understanding. obviously depends hugely the use case, etc. but if you had to pick one in a vacuum?

Less cheap: stop making pie charts for male/female numbers in a sample
* i.e., i couldn't begin to use it with anyone in my organization.
2. Really like data, but often over my head.
3. Really like map and data folks
4. Map and data election nerds on Twitter saved me in 2018 from deep depression.
5. Too many of those didn't come here. Miss em.
6. Have now followed most folks here.
7. Learned four new data vizes.
Everything's improved by putting it on a map 🙂
Gets two emojis. 📈📉
Bar chart only rates one emoji. 📊
I kind of like them, partly because they tend to break down when applied to most large datasets. But making them then fills you with a certain amount of shame, which is probably good on balance.

I kinda think the right answer really is just histograms and scatterplots.
Mmmmm, citation needed.
they're ubiquitous in some fields though, scientists seem to like them
in summary: meh. box plots are average. i have no strong opinion here.
"You'll see the violin plot... and then it'll be like oh and here's just the histogram separately because obviously you can't fuckin read this thing."
My favorite explainer vids BY FAR.
Honorable mentions: bubble charts, treemaps, raincloud plots
Ultimately it depends on what you’re trying to convey but I feel like pie charts are pretty versatile.
* and i learned a new data visualization tool today. so, thanks.
