Having worked with Unreal studios myself, I can say it is very accurate: Many times have studios built out their own solutions, even though there is a native one available in Unreal.

You have to take the time and effort to look into that yourself. It can be tough to find, but saves months.

Its probably a result of seasoned Unity developers expecting to build their own custom things instead of relying on the native engine features (because they are limited, unperformant and/or blackbox). They switch to UE and assume they have to do the same thing for core systems!

I've actually seen this happen a bunch with non-Unity folks moving over. So, AAA devs starting their own studio, and re-building because they either cannot find the features, or are used to building themselves from an internal engine.

Mind you, I've often wasted enormous time the other direction -- I find there IS something built in and research and adapt to it only to find its implementation doesn't go far enough, after weeks of work. And that its model makes extending it difficult to impossible.

Also also, next time you're telling someone about the Gameplay Ability System, and how it's much faster and easier to work with the basic existing systems, you can tell them "Now you're cooking with GAS"
