It's a total failure of democracy that politicians' refuse to even consider this issue. It is morally repugnant that the UK finances are being balanced through cuts to benefits.
So eloquently and straightforwardly summing up the repulsive double standards in our society which is keeping people poor and dragging more people into poverty - thank you! More people need to hear from you (and not just in the UK) @meidastouch.com

It's infuriating. We should absolutely tax wealth. And I think the best way to tax work less is a UBI. That would push down from the top while also pushing up from the bottom. Everyone needs to have some amount of passive income, not just the rich, to live with security and be able to prosper.
Mate, even if your message is true. They’re coming after you to discredit your message. You have to respond or come clean about your claims of being the best Citibank trader in 2011
There are various elements that could be interpreted in different ways to either corroborate his claim or discredit it. Why would anyone, his own former colleagues in particular, want to discredit him is question with an obvious answer, given how they have been part of the problem
I agree with the sentiment, but I didn’t think you structured the response eloquently. It came across as simply “tax the rich more”, and should have been more structured:
- how are they evading tax?
- how do we deal with them leaving (Norway exit tax)?
Your approach needs work.
After watching your podcast with Dan Priestley, I am beyond disappointed in my fellow Australian's ridiculous view that a 1% (or higher) tax on extreme wealth would disincentivise the rich from getting to that level. Are you serious mate? You would rather make $10M at 0% tax instead of $100M at 20%?
Sorry I missed you. I’d given up on Question Time a long time ago but I’d have tuned in if I’d have known. I sense it’s far too reactionary a show to absorb messages on wealth inequality…

Gary, you're killing it with your take on power dynamics and wealth transfer.

I don’t know if we even need to implement any new taxes, better off IMO removing all the loopholes the accountants of rich people and businesses use to hide their assets as untaxable.
I know this is an unpopular idea but I’d also get rid of the concept of “charitable status” for the same reason.
This is it. If you need to get £50 off 1000 people to pay for government spending, who is that £50 worth more to - 1000 millionaires or 1000 people living on disability benefit. Boggles my mind.
It’s just so bloomin’ obvious I have to genuinely ask myself, what am I missing that’s not possible to increase taxes for the wealthiest folks in the UK?
Genuinely curious to know what perceived risks might happen. 🤔
Fair play to you Gary. Seeing you on question time representing regular people and having to listen to the bollocks from all those loaded chancers on the panel. When are we all going to wake up and realise the rich are our real enemy. People need to start getting educated.
Doesn't the US tax its ex-pat citizens for assets? I remember BoBo Johnson giving up his US citizenship not coz he became PM but coz the US IRS came for the (I assume) capital gains tax on a house in the US that he had sold.
We all know BoBo is terrible with both his own & our £
Why don’t we start with a list of the UK oligarchs and start campaigning against them. I know they have no social conscience but if the wealthy turn on each other we may start something. The media is run by them so sites like this could be a start.
You’re the compassionate version of Farage we’ve all been waiting for Gary. Relatable, with a clear message but without the traitory, sell out, self interested, victimhood, irritating faced, othering, country damaging, twat stuff
Thank you for the representation Gary! I'd say in a panel like this, it helps to have counterarguments on talking points (will not work, rich will leave, grow economy) that you have already talked on YT. Tax profits on addressable UK market, tax UK based assets, how GDP has increased since 60s.
I also suggest you make the argument from a position of strength. You are an economist. You have an ability to explain how the economy works in layman's terms. What was eye opening to me was explaining how money flow in a closed system. Between government debt, income tax, rich wealth, rich benefit.
Just heard a tax advisor asking a simple question “why don’t the wealthy ‘tax the rich’ campaigners chip in and employ lawyers/ experts etc to tell us how we tax the rich successfully?”, eg they don’t leave the country so their wealth can be taxed

They'd be happy earning $10m as long as you earn $1m, but they'd hate a situation where they were earning $100M and you were earning $95M.
They want to look down on you.
