Might be slower if the microwave isn't vented well enough, you'll get an increase in CO2 concentration inside.

Also started wondering if it was possible to measure rate of reaction by mass lost? Like somehow it seems like this could be (somehow) a freshman chem lab. Start with bicarb, convert to carbonate, do some aqueous chem before and after?

Might be interesting to measure the CO2 concentration for an upper level analytical lab too. Could monitor concentration of CO2 as a matter of time with a head space GC, figure out optimum time and temp to run the reaction.

Not sealed, but I don't think mine has the greatest ventilation. Might not be enough to matter outside of a sealed container, it'd still work either way in a microwave.

Do microwaves work well on solid state reactions? I thought you can get quite localized heating.
