See: my other replies, BUT, I can't help but get exploitation vibes from mom, especially with the herald of Christ part. Gives me the same feel as the fake NDE book about the little boy who went to heaven but later said it was pressure from parents *I think* is how it went.
oh basically my aunt was nonverbal, among other disabilities, and we never had any access to who she was as a person. like she had no way to communicate, so whatever was happening in her mind, she couldn't get it across to us and we never knew it. and it fucking sucks. it's so hard and sad.
and you get why people want to invent these magical ways of thinking about it, to create this illusion that you DO have access to your loved one's selfhood. but it's fake. you've just made them into a mirror to reflect your own desires back to you.
As soon as I saw MMR blamed in one instance, I mentally scrapped the whole thing. Finished reading it, but willingness to "hear it out," as it were, was gone.
This is the sort of stuff I've *wanted* to believe my entire life. I was the kid at the science museum gift shop looking for *scientific* examinations of the paranormal.
But this is...exploitative and dangerous, especially in this moment.
Well traveled ground, in the 1970s academia, intelligence agencies, and popular media famously entertained many frauds and hacks. Magicians proved far better at debunking than enamored PhDs. Super titillating however!
I started listening to the podcast this morning while taking it with a pinch of salt and finding her presentation style a little jarring… but feeling like there was compelling stuff in there. Just read that article. Feel just a bit overloaded and ill
I’m still at a stage of my life where I’m trying to understand autism and get some intuitive sense of what it is including for the … I feel like I’m getting somewhere, then… I don’t know. Feel sad. I miss believing in things
Ooh a good read! It definitely does a good job of addressing a lot of the questions i had about the validity of the podcast, and still leaves open the possibility for something real to be happening… and very interesting that Powell is unhappy with dickens…
Damn this school firewall! As a parent of a verbally delayed Autistic child I am curious about this. I will have to check it later when I am not on the opps
I do think my child is really great at ready body language and recognizes patterns of behavior better than most of us. He knows exactly how to push buttons to get a particular response. I am really curious to read this. I will report back this evening.
I was going to say that I definitely think he could be extremely honed into body language/behavior/etc to be able to clock someone's thoughts much more than NT people ever could.
I do also think there is a possibility of some "extrasensory" things (not as extreme as media shows it probably) in general being "locked" within the human brain and perhaps there's a possibility of ND people being a bit more tapped in to stuff NTs can't really access mentally. Who knows! 🤷♀️
1. As they say, facilitated communication is bunk. This is settled.
2. This article barely touches on it, but it really leans into "The Hill" and says that nonverbal kids can suddenly understand, like, calculus because they LEARNED IT IN ANOTHER DIMMENSION
We like to think that knowing how to write beautiful poetry or do complex math is a thing that's
But it's a skill that requires some education and practice, and if you lack that, you're sure as hell not learning about it in fantasy land from people who can't teach it
Comments
fucking sigh, josephine. you're better than this.
my bad
"i've seen this movie"
(I'd have liked to see the journalist interview some autistic people, though! some nonspeaking autistic people even! and get their thoughts.)
Yes agreed!
But this is...exploitative and dangerous, especially in this moment.
Open to hearing critiques of it!!!

But you can just look it up, it's public record. It was suspended for normal shit like bad bookkeeping and inappropriate relationships

FC is junk science. Period
Especially if it *consistently* results in false rape claims!
This isn't all that different from Steve Jobs treating his cancer with fruit. It's not admirable!
