If they think FInal Fantasy VII JUST became 'Save The Planet' propaganda then they've never played Final Fantasy VII and listened to Barret's motivations and life goals.
You literally start the game as a mercenary working for eco-terrorist extremists, fighting against a giant corporation.
Genuinely I think a lot of the poor media literacy comes from them engaging with it as a child, missing some nuance, and then retrofitting whatever it was ACTUALLY about to work with whatever they politically agree with now. Because admitting they liked something woke is online suicide for them.
Wouldn't say it's what the story is mainly about, but it's certainly a message in the game, and I'm not sure how people can miss that when it's literally how the game opens.
Oh that’s what FF7 is about. I thought it was a bisexual sci-fi fantasy about hot men and hot women fighting with magic, but the actual message is also pretty based too
literally. i had 0 ff knowledge until remake came out and i watched someone play the demo and i was like wait this is bi heaven AND has a good message? PEAK?
"okay subtext is hard" is one thing but barrett saying the exact string of words "save the planet" in the context of "from the megacorporation" at least twice in the first hour of the game is another
I'm certain that the people (mostly men) who do this were too busying projecting themselves so hard onto Cloud that they could sell movie tickets while playing.
My main takeaways from FFVII: fuck capitalism, giant swords are based, Sephiroth is my favorite character ever (and he’s also hot), One Winged Angel is my favorite song ever, and I can survive the sun exploding.
