Pretty much every story I have heard about big companies working from home - including one major motorsport series - has boiled down to "the boss is lonely and wants people to come into the office". It's literally the only justification they have, the quest is to find an appropriate euphemism.

The theory was always that people would be less productive with all the distractions of home, but the reality turned out to be that you’re always at work.
I don’t miss commuting at all.

did you know, for example, that in all of the US (and Canada) store cashiers are not allowed to sit during their shifts...?
"how dare this peasant sit while serving me!"
And of course, there are lots of jobs where working from home isn't an option. Those are the real jobs, where people actually do something useful.
