Here’s a shout out to all the authors who turn kids into readers.

My first history teacher inspired me and it's probably 50% of what I read today
I also got the 'suitable' books, but mainly, I was a library buff. Eclectic in taste
1. TV
2. Comics.
I've read to my kids all their lives, but they weren't becoming avid readers in their early teens. And then comes along Wings of Fire and BAM! Obsession level reading that spread to other books. We're talking 2-3 books a week these days!
Lots of library time for this little family. 💜
I had a Mother who read to me.
Judy Blume
Walter Farley
Happy new year beautiful
(Gaia Girls Book Series btw)

Then I found Stephen King in about 5th grade and couldn’t shove enough of it into my brain.
MY kids were raised in Public Libraries, though I was not as faithful as my mom (I had an extensive home library by then). From toddler to teen, they had access to anything.
Stephen King taught me to love reading.
I also had paid for an expert outside of school. One on one reading instruction helped. School resources are stretched thin.
I have gifted her a book that I liked when I was her age that I don't read anymore (and I prefer it goes to her than a stranger), and I hope it will help. I might be biased because I love reading myself 😅
They made a difference to me as a kid and for my kids too
Also... to all the teachers who provide the books (often from their own finances), class time to read and discuss the texts, and homework assignments that help build reading habits and skills.

The Witches is still antisemitic trash.
If that had been my only sale of the week I would have been happy.

An easy bedtime read
Therefore, the appeal to get children to read should be addressed to parents, not to authors.
So, says Papa, you have to read a lot before you can right a book?
Yep.
He reads a lot.
And the Mars books by Edgar Rice Burroughs made me want to be a writer since I was 10.
Also, if you want inspiration for DARK kids books the Animophs series is brutal.
Just keep nudity and swearing down for the parents and you'll probably be fine.
Both the redwall and Warriors series are testaments to this.
also, i relate to that Bluth quote. dark stories with happy endings are one of my favorite genres. lol
We’re loving Cressida Cresswell, How to Train Your Dragon series. Lamenting the end of book 12.
And fondly remember many of the books I read when I was a kid.

turning kids into readers is one of the best things you can do as a human, follows 'teaching a man/woman to fish'
if they learn how to learn, they can defend themselves, and create new stuff, and protect the rest of us... on and on
In our case it was the Astrosaurs series by Steve Cole. When 8yrs, our son who has ADHD, was highly reading resistant. On a train trip I bought him a bagged magazine to look at, + an Astrosaurs novel was bundled. Became his obsession. Apparently other parents of boys had same experience.
It really felt miraculous at the time. When my son had outgrown them, I put the novels on Ebay. A desperate father in Australia got in touch and asked me to sell them to him, because it was difficult to get hold of them there at the time. He gladly paid the large shipping cost!
Absolutely these books, dinosaurs, and palaeontology should be for everyone!
Also there were so many of her contemporaries who were better
📖 On sale for just $4.99!

I couldn't find it in our catalog, not knowing what he'd checked out and read. He didn't have a serial number. I needed librarian help!
