Yeah, up here we have to make excuses about why we stay. Aside from the clean water and the moose and the wolves and the walleye and the loons, of course.
Yeah I get it. What we tell ourselves here in the summer when it’s 110° and we can fry an egg on our windshield is that it’s not that bad because it’s a dry heat. 😅
It’s the only way we survive.
This dry cold SUCKS, I'm tired of my hands being so dry no matter how much lotion I put on them. My nose has also been dry and I'm worried about getting nose bleeds.
I'm living in the St. Paul area (kinda?) so I know exactly what you mean.
The last time I was in Minneapolis it was 11° with about 4% humidity. I walked into the airport carrying my coat because it didn't seem too terribly cold. When I got home to Alabama, the temp was in the 40s with humidity around 70% and seemed colder than the arctic wonderland I'd just left
The U of M is a great school, granted there’s several colleges here. The temperature swings are a whole other thing, -20 in the winter at some point to 100 degrees in the late summer. Mother Nature doesn’t want us to get used to anything 😂
The weather is the ONLY qualm I have about his possibly going to college there. Just seeing this temp made me shiver. But if he gets in and chooses to go to school there, I'll support him. We liked the Twin Cities!
Just make sure he has layering clothes handy and he’ll quickly learn how to use them.
Warning, though - I came to Minnesota in 1989 to study. I am still here.
As I stood in line with other fearsome Minnesotans for a free pizza at the new Tono’s Pizzeria + Cheesesteak in Inver Grove Heights, yesterday morning, sipping a Caribou smoothie, with one winter glove. I still rather live through Minnesota winters than reside in a red state down south.
Although it would be a dream come true if Minnesota wasn’t as purple as it has become.. but thanks to woke, educated voters in Mpls, St Paul, surrounding suburbs, Duluth, etc. we didn’t vote for that orange grimace either time. I love my state and our Governor Walz. 🙌🏽💯
Ah yes, My state has hot summers but it’s a ‘dry heat’. That’s the bright side of ‘being outside in the afternoon is unbearable.’ And ‘at least we don’t have snow in winter!’ 🥶 Hope the wind stays away!
Having lived in a Minneapolis suburb for a few years, I can attest that-1 and 5 feel about the same. Also, properly bundled to go out in those temps the wind doesn’t make any difference.
No, northern neighbor, what we tell ourselves is "but it could be REALLY cold" as we recall the last horrible coldspell that lasted like 10 days last winter where the high was like -15 and the feels like was -32 😆.
Why Iowans tend to not even wear coats if it's in the 30s, not until single digits
It's not just you. It's supposed to get cold here this week, too. One day, the high is even less than 70°!
I'll be breaking out the warm hat and boots.
My mom was like that. She’d grill in a snowstorm. 😂🤣 In one minute, you’d see her walking around the house in her night gown & in the next minute she’d be out back wearing boots, hat, scarf & checking the grill. Her beloved 🐈 would be right there beside her checking things out too. I miss them both.
I live in Saint Paul (right next to Minneapolis for any who don’t one) and I’ve lived in Melbourne. 38 C in Melbourne is way more tolerable and I actually like the cold.
Well, between sensible healthcare, an amazing public transit system, much friendlier people, a great food scene (to be fair, ours is surprising good too), considerably better pay/working conditions, generally better weather, the ocean and a host of other things I remember fondly, y’all have it good.
I recently learned a quick way to do the conversion - temp in C multiplied by 1.8, then add 32. That's a sweltering 100.4°F. Nobody needs it to be that hot.
It's been as high as 10C recently in Vancouver, Canada. The winter roses are beautiful, tulip and daffodil bulbs are popping up. In Victoria Cherry trees are already blooming. Am I bragging? Yes I am.
Yes, and that's Fahrenheit. Good for cryotherapy if there is no wind and you have a private place to stand in your birthday suit outside. I'd forget a polar bear dip though.
I'm sitting here in 29° weather thinking 5° isn't bad for Minneapolis in the winter. And then I realized you were talking Fahrenheit, not Celsius. Even then 5° F is not too bad.
A little north, in Winnipeg, it is currently -15 F. Which is why we are sitting in 29°C in the Philippines.
Luxury!
I'm a former Michigan Ski Patroller.
The small hill decided to open when wind chill was -25 F.
We closed an hour later, but not before some tuely frigid chair lift rides.
5 degrees sound like a sauna to that.
In an ideal world, I'd keep it at 72°. Barring any other circumstances beyond my control (like losing my government contracting job), in two more years, my finances should be in a better place.
I wanted to visit my daughter and her family in Rochester Hills, MI one winter (I wanted to see big snow.) My daughter told me she didn’t want me to come. Why? Because they didn’t have “tourist snow” there and the cold would probably kill me. Now, she’s back in Texas. Missed my chance
45+ yrs ago, went 2 Old Tucson w/my 7 yo. 5 months pregnant, no a/c anywhere and the temp was 116. Two old men in their 70s were talking about it was a dry heat so didn’t feel hot. Told them cook a turkey with a pan of water in the oven or not cooks the same! I was mad! Prob still in therapy!
Lived in Phoenix for 12+ years. I spent a good deal of that time working outside at the airport. I'll take 110 and 10% humidity over 90 and 80% humidity, no problem.
Today’s temperature was 74° in Phoenix. It was a lovely day. Now I see why we have so many snowbirds. It gets pretty toasty here in Phoenix between July and September 1 but I’ll take a dry heat over 90% humidity and 100°.
I know of a MN high school band that went to play at a presidental inauguration parade. Their director had them practicing in the cold in DC, in uniform before the parade. The parade was canceled due to the cold- the temps parade day were higher than the day they practiced.
This is from our Bureau of Mrteorology app. That's 86 degrees F. At 9 pm in the evening folks! It was a very hot day today here in Melbourne, Australia.
🤣 only reason I didn't walk to the Thai place across from the truck stop is because it's closed today. I was telling myself the same thing before I knew that.
We learned last year to remember to check Texas temps before mailing out our tropical plant shipments. If we don't live there, it's easy to assume Texas is always warm because it's in the south.
"Feels like" isn't the same as wind chill. It has to do with how the locals dress for the weather. That is why when it is 60 the 'feels like' is 65 in MN because they refuse to take off those damn knit caps.
We were at a feels like -22° yesterday. This morning we are at -10° actual and feels like. At least it’s not windy is definitely something we say in ND too!
It didn't bother me at 18 when it was 34 below in Binghamton and I was trudging across the campus to DJ a midnight radio show. But that was many decades ago, and now a 4-block walk in 30 degrees is daunting.
I've lived in IL, MN, OH, FL, VA, NC and traveled for work in most states east of the Mississippi & a few on the west. I no longer ask myself that question.
It’s hard when you grew up, lived here your whole life, family here, and it’s what you know. But as many do the older I get the easier it would be to be south for the winter months.
Not to cite anecdotal evidence as proof of anything, but here is how your identical post is currently doing on Elmo’s dumpster fire platform. One place is getting a lot more engagement than the other.

& I thought Kansas was bad
I’ll let myself out now
Can anyone feel anything by -37°?
Warning, though - I came to Minnesota in 1989 to study. I am still here.
Everyone was so lovely, we kept saying "Minnesota nice!" to each other. 😁
Regardless of wind, it's fucking cold.

Check that shit out, stop being a puss, and go out there in your skivvies.
Your body doesn't know it's alive until you test it. Go push some limits!
Plugging in when the weather is nasty
No garage or carport
Gotta get a permit to build a carport

Toasty warm in those tents.
These are the things
we tell ourselves.

Do you remember winter in the Twin Cities just 2 years ago? Something like the third snowiest winter on record?
This isn't even below zero. I'll take this weather for the next 7 weeks if I can get it!
😅🤣😂
We deserve that. I wish we didn’t, but we do.
Only 1476 days left.

You can't dress for that 😡
10C =50 °F
20C =68 °F
30C =86 °F
40C =104 °F
Feels like: oh fuck it’s cold.

There's a big ass desert in West Texas.
El Paso has the reliable power grid, though.
