They don't believe in the power of anything but whatever it is that their uncle's neighbor's brother's mailman posted on Facebook. That stuff has to be true.
Nope, let’s base our decisions on a 2000-year old book written by people who thought the sun revolved around the earth — which was flat to begin with. I mean, what could go wrong?
Yea... only 57% of Americans still believe that science has a positive impact, that other 43% includes flat earthers (2%) and other nuts detached from reality.

Throughout the years I have always watched big shots with money. I used to be one until I realized there was more than money, stocks, etc. That my life is more important than all that headache. Someone is always trying to fuck you over. No thanks. I like being a real human. #RESIST
Exalted above all else in this life, I am a constant gardener of a healthy, normative, functioning intellection. I can't even imagine what it might be like to allow that maxim to be vitiated or discarded.
Science and hence science research depends on having a mind that can apprehend reality apart from one's self. That is gravity is not a subjective fact different for different people. So science is a matter of overcoming the egocentric thought of a child, e.g., thinking the moon follows me.
George, 60% of Americans never went to college. Those same kids average B&C grades (below the national average). So they are dumber than the average person in high school. Not a shocker. Now consider how many of those kids barely made it our of high school with even worse grades.
There’s science, and there’s science fiction. What you’re suggesting is beyond either. It’s pushing the extremes of fantasy writing, with wizards and orcs and the like.
This is what happens when you make education prohibitively expensive, you dumb down the populace which you can then manipulate to achieve your desired outcomes
Add in this push from your political party to adhere to archaic religious beliefs and it’s all over for free will. Women are being pushed back into the 1950’s
It was a 50 year effort to weaken our education system. Which made sure only kids whose parents could afford private school could succeed. It’s a creation of a new nobility.

Does anyone recall when a Black female politician (I forget who) made a crack that she hoped Clarence Thomas would eat a lot of butter and fatty foods... and the Republicans absolutely shat their collective pants and demanded that she be deported to Mars immediately?
There is one line in the Bible that says God can fool the scientists. And our evangelical churches have been spewing this nonsense since the 70s. They think everything on the planet is for their taking, like drilling, and mining, etc. God gave it to them, the chosen ones 🤥
Scientific research is the application of logic to further understanding of things. If you don't believe in science you don't believe in logic. As Mr. Spock would say "Captain that is illogical".
I don't "believe" in science: I understand it--including its power, limitations, applications, & its ongoing process for achieving greater approximations of the truth with each self-correcting iteration. Its messy, but is the best tool humans have for getting close to the truth of the universe.
I was born in a small town. I work in a factory. I regularly meet anti vaccine fanatics, holocaust deniers, people who think the moon landing was a hoax, and that the World Trade Center was taken down by the US government.
I have heard people say reading is a waste of time. Ignorance is glorified.
When you know you can't keep up with smart and educated people, your best move is to devalue the worth of education and smartness in general. Then, in your mind, you're not inferior anymore.
How could they ever admit that? Remember the classic "Twilight Zone" episode where the ugly beasts thought the beautiful girl was the ugly one? It's that.
I too, live in a small town and meet folks with similar views and have grave concerns about the weaponization of disinformation. But TBH, your post caught my eye because of a less nefarious thing -- your last name. Noftz is my maiden name and I very rarely see it outside of my immediate family.
Hello,
I have family members all over but most of them are concentrated in northern Ohio. Clyde, Ohio is where I am from and so are a lot of my family members.
I suspect the name was shortened from some other name like Nofzinger or Naftzinger, something like that. I can't get any certainty on that.
I've observed it my entire life ever since Ronald Reagan the people of America have become insulated and confused leading to a complete apathy. At this point it's my belief the majority of constituencies don't vote. This is the third world war and it's by corporations for Monopoly
Some of the saddest stories I heard during the COVID pandemic were of nurses caring for patients who were dying from it. They begged for the vaccine then, but it was too late.
I’m all about scientific research. Science is exacting so when treatments and/or cures are realized, I applaud. I really can’t understand RFK’s position on polio vaccines. That’s a horrendous illness that kills. He doesn’t know science at all and doesn’t respect what is being discovered.
I believe the right feels they have been treated like children being told not to play with fire, and now it is their turn to tell their parents "Oh yeah? Look what we can do with matches!"
The left is waiting to see what they will burn down...
You would have thought Americans would have remembered how the fuckwit handled the last pandemic. I’m literally freaked out by the impact on our population health.
I came from a small town in rural Virginia. I regularly hear from people back home about him. They think he did a great job during the pandemic and that just a few people died as a result. I don’t even know what to say to that.
Great swaths of the nation now believe in 'influencers' trying to peddle their wares - whether home remedies for all ailments or how to grow a successful side hustle from some island in the South Pacific. 🙄
“as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns—the ones we don't know we don't know.” — Donald Rumsfeld (2002)
In all seriousness. As a retired statistician, he's describing threats to the interval validity of a design (in his case) a course of action. The best course of action is to proceed with caution. He did the opposite. That made him a bullshit artist.
First, they decided what they were going to do, then made up the rationale. The biggest Pinocchio was that Sadam was in league with Al Quaeda. Dictators suppress fundamentalists.
As a recently retired science professor, I have been fighting this fight for decades. My main goal was teaching the non-science majors to leave class with the minimum basic understanding of what science was and how we, as scientists understand the world.
The percentage of students that I think I successfully reached felt pretty good in the early 2000s, but then started to drop in a fairly rapid curve. This may be correlated to the decline of time spent on science teaching in public schools.
It seems similar to what must have been happening when the Library of Alexandria was burned by Christian zealots - rejecting all the knowledge that came before them. It's a bit terrifying to think about.
Unfortunately, scientific research will all but cease if RFK Jr takes over HHS. I can just see decimation of funding for vaccine research, data sharing, awareness, campaigns, you name it.
From what I heard on MSNBC (Joy Reid I think) RFK jr. wants to force vaccine makers to conduct long term, randomized, double-blind experimental studies to prove — reprove — routine vaccines’ effectiveness and safety. Parents won’t know if their kid got the real vaccines for years or until they get
really sick. When I was a kid in the 50s a schoolmate of mine was left brain damaged by measles. The year before the vaccine my husband’s aunt, the mother of 3 small kids, was left a quadriplegic by polio. She lived the next 20+ years in a hospital bed in the dining room. My cousin had to be
hospitalized with chicken pox when he was in his twenties. My grandfather lost his SIX youngest siblings in a diptheria epidemic in NYC. And then there are all the boys who were left sterile by a mumps infection.
Too bad the media didn’t tell these stories when the anti-vax movement was started.
And instead of repeatedly just giving a platform to parents bamboozled by the measles-autism con they should have always made it clear that this scam was started by UK doc Andrew Wakefield who was working on his own measles vaccine. He lost his license but got rich anyway and now lives in the US —
That would take acts of Congress. Loads of government spending is in red states. Redstone arsenal, Oak Ridge, TVA. And with their tight majority they couldn't even shut down anything in California, as the local Republican delegation wouldn't allow it. No audible *poofs* expected here, just whimpers.
What makes any of you think that the felon will pay any attention to the rules, the checks and balances. DOGE seems like just a way to validate painting targets on the backs of departments. And if the depts don’t close, loyalists will burn them to the ground. Jan 6 was also a proof of concept
Congress has the power of the purse.

It's not about what Trump would do. He is nothing but an avatar.
It's about what all of us will do.
DOGE has no power whatsoever that the president doesn't already have. Musk is used to get his way. He is not going to stay around once he sees how little power there is.
There are limits to what Trump will do if GOP senators let him know that they can and will refuse to bring his pet projects and legislation to fruition if he goes too far.
My mother-in-law was a quadriplegic polio victim who spent much of her remaining life in an iron lung; my husband the only documented case of in-utero transmission of polio...he has post-polio tremors, increasing in severity with age...let the good times roll! in wheelchairs.
She was born in 1925 and was one of the last people to contract polio as the vaccine became available to adults the next year(1956.). There’s a reason you haven’t met polio victims! Mission was accomplished.
Sorry at least half of the American population is stupid no sense of history or future. Only “me myself and I” . After 19 years living in the USA I went back to
Europe. The difference is noticeable. Sorry.
If we have another pandemic like Covid(people quit boosters)Measles ( no vaccinations) or polio return ( no vaccinations) how many will pass due to ignorance!
Those of us boosted and vaccinated will be fine. I need to look into that RSV thing.
Not sad about the ignorant although I am already pissed on behalf of the vulnerable who will suffer needlessly.
I also wonder how they believe we got to be a powerful nation. How did we get the arsenals they are so quick to threaten to use (“just nuke ‘em”). We lose our intelligence (as in smarts), we will decline rapidly. And too many have already in a land where you can pursue an education opt out.
Quite ironic that mobile phones and cars - particularly the ones with big gas tanks - are zealously guarded. I wonder how they think they came to be 🤔.
There’s been a centuries-long history of uneducated religious people fearing science was the work of the devil. In fact their fear of science resulted in the torture & deaths of thousands of young girls and boys convicted of witchcraft for being associated with a scientist known as Dipple in 1621.
I have a question about that @wajali.bsky.social @yasharali.bsky.social @deanobeidallah.bsky.social you guys that I just listed are prominent Muslims in our community. Doesn't it talk a lot about science a lot in the Quran? So you see science is part of our lives even religion
This is the problem with democrats, they take positions based on their principles and reject their current administration and not look at the long term repercussions and decide not to vote leading them to shoot themselves on the foot in the process. It’s the long game that should matter.
