Speedrunners, I have a question for y'all; when it comes to derusting a game, how do you go about it? Do you practice on-stream/off-stream, go straight into runs, or both?

Stream time is basically the main dedicated time I have to practice any of my speedgames at this point. I try to squeeze in some non-stream practice around marathon submissions but yeah, it's mainly just stream for me now.
depends how much time i have put in the game previously, games ive played alot i just jump into runs, otherwise i have to derust most things offstream before i start doing runs again
Mostly depends on the game, but for what I run right now, Individual Levels are mostly the best way I can learn how to play the game, granted it can be a bit of a double edged sword as that's just mostly what you know when it comes to running certain levels LMAO
Whenever I derust it usually comes with updating some strats, so I tend to practice off stream, but I still don’t expect much out of runs until a week or so passes depending on the game
Depends on the game, but mostly I'll just jump right back into runs then focus on any levels that I royally flubbed. All on stream for me. I rarely do runs off stream.
depends on the game. there are a lot of games i can just go right back into, but a lot more that i need a good week of derusting before i feel anywhere close to confident doing runs again
Usually just fire it up for a couple runs and see what I remember/don't remember, then get into the weeds with the practice. If I start practicing random stuff, I never actually get back into runs because I feel overwhelmed by not being comfortable with the run as a whole yet.
Off to get the basics back and practice any possibly nasty tricks that the game has. On after that. Any derust I expect to not get close to PB pace especially at first so i'm not particularly fussed about whether I "do well" or not - it's all for getting back into the swing of things
For me personally, a little from column A and from column B. Practicing on-stream is good for when I need to also talk over my runs, but occasionally it helps doing off-stream runs as well so I can concentrate more on the game. It helps a lot of my runs aren't particularly too long either.
Straight to runs. Usually on stream, simply because my free time is limited. I might practice a couple harder tricks before the derust runs, but that's an exception for games I am actually competitive at.
Depends on what I'm trying to accomplish. If it's just for fun, derusting via runs. If it's to get a better time, practice on and off stream with runs here and there to remember what I practiced. Also runs to see if there are consistency issues that you didn't have during practice.
I only really run one game so this is more when derusting a different category but it’s probably not too different. Depends if I want to overhaul my strats or not. If not then I’d start with runs and then focus practice on the parts I struggled with in those runs.
Depends on the run, but I'll practice the tricks that I need to do, mostly offline generally, then start runs. Then figure out where my movement needs work from there

My hands also no longer have unlimited stamina, in my 40’s.
So sometimes, I just have to yeet into trying the thing.
I don’t really stream much these days but when I did I would have done most of my practice off stream with an occasional practice stream.
