Looked at one in probate, & not only was the house contents intact but personal items (a hairbrush with hair still in it, a toothbrush & partially used paste etc) were still in situ. Felt very intrusive on the previous occupants privacy & so sad that no-one cared enough to remember to remove them.

A few years ago my sister nearly bought one of those derelict cottages in Leitrim that looked like it could be a nice home once fixed up. But she discovered it had no mains water, electricity or sewage and the fuckery getting them installed made the project impossible.

I bought one of those derelict, no water, no sewerage, no electricity, no doors, no windows cottages 20 years ago. It's all good now. No 'grand designs' or fancy architects - just a couple of local builders. Best thing I ever did.

Exactly. It's all well and good to have 'vision' for a project, but as the price of raw materials spiral no one can accurately budget for works anymore. You'd need a spare 100k in the contingency plan to cover your arse.

I bought a borderline habitable cottage on 1/2 acre in Rosc. Has a shed with 3 wall and asbestos roof. it's what we had to do. Finding a job = impossible, but it was the only place we could live. Lucky to have internet, & utilities.
