I always hate it when people are like "Oooh, they just don't realize the impact that what they're doing will have!" They know. At the best, they don't care, and most of time they're gleefully anticipating the fallout.
"This will affect them eventually!" They don't care. They would literally and happily disinherit their own flesh-and-blood kids and relatives for being gay, being trans, or getting an abortion.
On a local and short level, yes. That's sometimes true. On a national level, it was only in my lifetime that Scotland decriminalised homosexuality, then made it legal to marry. It wasn't always clear cut, the public didn't back it at the time.
Now, you get the occasional numpty, but vast majority support. It's normal. The kids don't even see it as an issue, it just is part of life.
Of course change can't happen too soon. As you say, people don't see it until it affects them.
the "as a side effect of demonizing our extremely boring, routine healthcare for arbitrary ideological reasons, trans people will die! coincidentally!" framing I keep seeing is driving me into a frenzy
And in in the UK, gender affirming care isn't legal or available on the NHS, or private health insurance, because Rowling and her TERF ilk have big voices. Not that I can get most Americans to take that seriously. -__-
As an American, the sheer number of BRITS I have to explain this to is mind boggling. Even the people engaging in actual defense of the trans community on social media don't seem to know how fucking bad it is.
they are ghouls and they love killing both children and trans people. you cannot account for their actions if you think they are interested in universal compassion for all human beings
and to be clear: the right wing oligarchs of the supreme court are not inhuman monsters for the way they dehumanize others. they are living proof that humans have capacity to perform great evil whether they do it in the service of themselves, the law, or their god
