I wouldn't go with this idea as a being a way to 'help the authors' you love.
And it is a good way to make people question WHAT made you crazy enough to do so.
I’ve heard it’s the same in the US. But when I asked my local librarian, he wasn’t sure.
May I also suggest:
have slightly puzzling badges on your tote bag which reference their books
(Works for me)
