It sounds more like the lead up to the great depression.
Fewer workers working means less consumer spending. Less spending leads to fewer jobs. A vicious cycle. And it was all avoidable.

Sadly, it's true of most coups -- which is what I think this is. As in war, you can do a lot of damage and destruction in a few minutes and the rebuilding then takes months or years. We are in the middle of a takeover of our government by malign actors.
