Its good, though this and that season of true detective im like “why would anybody live up here?” For such a wide open area it feels so claustrophobic. Maybe its nice in the summer?
My favorite thing about them is that if they tried attacking anywhere besides Alaska during that specific time of the year, they'd get bodied by civilians armed to the teeth or whatever local police is there lol. They're terrifying when they're in control.
They were certainly rather different from the current vampiric norm. Not sexy or suave or witty. Just fucking terrifyingly fast, vicious, ruthless. Proper predators. I thought they were great.
So many vampire movies shy away from what a blood sucking undead monster would actually be like if it was real, and that one did not. The un-Bela Lugosi vamp.
Foreboding, dark movie with twists that captures the true essence of the winter doldrums. I love the build up to the final showdown, just wish a proper sequel would have been made.
Vampires never go out of style. They are aspirational in any iteration. Elegant dressers. Charming raconteurs. Live forever. Apex predators. Threat to humanity. What's not to love?
Loved the concept and atmosphere in that. Those were truly terrifying vampires. I'm surprised they haven't explored that world again in a sequel or series.
It was based on a graphic novel with the same name, and that was only the first volume in the series. So it is odd they haven't returned to the screen with some of the other concepts.
That movie really surprised me for how good it was and just the spin of a long night. Why wouldn't vampires live where the sun shines as little as possible?
Most definitely! They’re feral, wild creatures who have picked a tiny town close to the Arctic Circle as the perfect place to satiate their hunger. The townspeople are at such a severe disadvantage. The vampires have come to kill them all and disappear. 👍
I liked the concept, and I loved this one shot where the camera went from one attack and kept panning up to to show attacks in every house. It was a great way to bring home the scale of it.
Just the other day I had an idea for a vampire film.
What if instead rich erudite vampires, a dumb flubby middle aged drunk degenerate gambler became a vampire who carries on with his loser ways, but immortal.
Like Barfly but a vampire film.
The director said, “I want to make vampires scary again,” (this was in the era of Twilight, Blade, etc) and I thought he did a good job. More like (as you say) feral intelligent carnivores than doomed aristocrats.
That does sound neat! I'll need to check it out when my boys are out with my parents. [Spoiler] The last really good media with vampires I saw was Midnight Mass. I loved the creeping dread that the priest found something in the desert and -brought it home-.
If you really think about it, it’s kind of a no-brainer for vampires to want to have a summer home way down south and a winter home way up north. All that continuous darkness for half a year would be like Disney Land for them.
Fun thing about the film: It’s set in Alaska in the wintertime, so they edited out the condensation from the breath of the actors playing the vampires, but not the actors playing humans to really drive home that they were undead.
Great movie. Saw it in theaters and laughed a lot the idea of like Arctic Russian vampires who live where there’s no sun most of the year on an old cargo ship is very cool. The beheading requirement is like Old Testament vampire shit severing the head from the heart. All in all very cool
Movies like 30 Days of Night, Near Dark, heck, even Lost Boys, are the best ones. Back to when vampires were to be feared as the vicious predators in the dark they were.
Yup, though I reserve the right to grumble about the casting. The protagonists in the comic were middle-aged, comfortably-padded native Alaskans, and whilst Josh Hartnett and Melissa George are both good actors, neither of them are that.
I loved it! Like a lot of movies and media forgot like one of the most important (to me) things about vampires: they look kinda like humans, but they don't fucking like humans.

Favorite part was, "No god."
Your virgin eyes get to see it for the first time 😄
I lived in Barrow for two years, spent most of my time indoors.
Best time for outdoors is March-May.
As a former Barrow resident... there were too many story flaws for me to overlook.
BUT, the "utilidor" that connects the buildings was dead-on.
(Go see Sinners and you'll see)
The second one was not good 😆💀
Great movie.
Barrow is just about 70° Lat.
McMurdo is over 75° Lat.
McMurdo has 90 days of "no fly" weather (due to the inability of fuel to vaporize below -60°F. Barrow gets some days like that, but not a solid month.
But everyone, just see "Sinners".
Also, that movie is 18 years old. Drone shots were unheard of and stitching scenes together with CGI much rarer, so how'd they shot it?

What did you like about it?
I love how vampires are scary again, by the way. No more love lorn brooding ancient studs who chase high school girls.
It’s fantastic.
He was great in that role.
