Oh, it most DEFINITELY increased the power of the slave states, who were already dominating economically thanks to the enthusiastic embrace of fucking chattel slavery and the development of the cotton gin.
The 3/5 comprise…. Though a stain on our history, was the only way to unify the different sections of the young nation…. Otherwise we would have started out as opposing forces warring with another as we expanded westward
If you’re referring to WT Sherman he could’ve cared less, just as he left thousands of runaways to die or be enslaved again as he crossed the Oconee river headed to Savannah. He only wanted to win the war, Lincoln wanted them sent to Africa
Question if I may - one of Sherman's express goals was to bring down the leadership of the Confederate armies, it's support structures, etc. effectively total war, yes?
I won't lie, even the union had problems, but let me ask, what would change had the Confederate leaders been properly punished?
What I mean by this is, well, post war we effectively gave them a slap on the wrist.
That leadership remained in their positions, creating generations of people whom have stemmed from old-ish money and created this butterfly effect, including separate but equal.
So your whole point is the US shouldn’t exist…. African Americans should’ve been shipped elsewhere (because slave trade was still active) and North America should have developed into multiple warring nations. As imperfect as it is, we have been a positive influence in world history until recently
1. At the time of the 3/5 compromise there was no way to know what the fate of the newly formed country would be or whether it would be a positive influence on the world.
2. The point isn’t whether the US should or should not have have existed. You posited that, while distasteful, the 3/5 compromise was necessary. But you justified this by invoking things that had not yet happened. Basically a post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy.
…to know this at the time. It is likely morally indefensible now and certainly was at the time. No one can predict the future.
3. You then make the “everyone else is doing it” argument. As if human trafficking and slavery happening elsewhere made it okay for the US to do it. Or at least…
Have all of these racists always been in this country, but just laying low, or have we grown a bumper crop of racists? I cannot understand how the hell we have so many ignorant and hateful pieces of trash.
I think there have always been some. But I think a lot of young people were terminally online during COVID and got radicalized into racism, whereas more of my generation was taught to move away from the racism of our ancestors.
We’ve already established the Democrats don’t actually care about women and minorities so when are we gonna have open, honest discussion about why we continue to support them because for decades they’ve been the lesser of two evils. Is now a good time?
Thinking we need a party that does not exist yet. The party that’s not run by old white men, the party that doesn’t think DEI or CRT are offensive words, the party that doesn’t think equality means white people are better.
I’m in.
After 🍊 we have a chance to do it.
Progressives yes, actually. White liberal men need to commit and get excited about sweeping change for the better just like conservatives are stoked for wanton destruction. Unless white liberal men are just as afraid as conservatives that more rights means less pie? 🤔
Not a fan of the progressives. They don’t fit my requirements for inclusion.
But - the constitution is dead now. It was a bs document written totally rich white male centric, anyway. We need constitution Mark II - take what we have learned and do it right. 🍊 has given us that opportunity.
Saying they don’t fit YOUR requirements doesn’t sound all that noble when it’s not followed by suggestion for how you—presumptively a white liberal man—would do things better. Conservative men want to ‘protect’ women, liberal men need to fight for women.
I actually deliberately avoided it, as it brings in race.
How would I do better - as I mentioned: inclusivity. Everyone. Everyone is free to be themselves. That’s it. No barriers to anything people want to do.
The premise is simple: The GOP never liked us, Independents are cowards, and the Democrats are selling us out. We need to go off the menu because we’ve been getting scraps for too long.
At some point, we’re gonna have to figure out how to get over this martyr complex and recognize that we don’t want to eat shit until we die. It’s getting tired.
If Gaza is your line in the sand but not reproductive rights then either you need to reexamine your priorities and your privilege or you’re trolling. It’s just not funny anymore.
Obviously but that it took centuries for a Kamala Harris to even be entertained as an option is the problem along with Roe being overturned, all of it. We’re an afterthought and we’ve accepted it to the point where we’re numb.
Yes. Americans worship patriarchy. That’s been the problem all along. We failed to elect the right person, twice against Trump, because they were women. (Among many other things, but I don’t have enough space to type at all, but you know what I mean.)
White women failed, yeah. It’s past time to recognize that internalized misogyny paved the way for this and the complacency of ‘oh well, lesser of two evils it is!’ all but ensures it will continue. Seriously can we just admit it and get past it already, ffs.
Start burning crosses at the state house, I guess, since it looks like the klan is back in charge in Indiana. This is not surprising. After they lose, extremists don't change their tune, Confederates, Nazis, fascist loyalists just get quieter...and wait for an opening
He is a total embarrassment to the state. He calls himself a Christian Nationalist but does a poor job following Christ’s footsteps. He leads a church but has no actual theological credentials.
3/5ths? Sure why not go back to when women couldn’t vote or own land. This administration is not going back a couple decades. They are going back a century.
Their energy would be better spent trying to end hunger in our country rather than new ways to twist words and history to fit their authoritarian model.
Among the awful effects of the “compromise” not mentioned here:
— A strong incentive to acquire more enslaved people
— For every Rep. earned by counting 3/5 of the enslaved, each slaver state for an extra Electoral College vote. Which is why all US Presidents prior to 1860 were pro slavery.
The 3/5 Compromise gave the South an undue advantage in the Electoral College (and presidential elections) because it gave the South 11 members of the House of Representatives it would not have otherwise had (providing an outsized voice in federal legislation).
And of course then consider how these same incentives line up when an incarcerated felon who can’t vote still counts as 100% of a person for electoral representation purposes.

Just so asinine

I mean, we still had a civil war on this exact issue. It just ensured nearly 100 more years of slavery.
It may have been better to nip it in the bud, eh?

Didn’t a Republican recently quote Goebbles to an assembly?
- Joseph Goebbels [N-DE]
- Keith Self [R-TX]
Bluesky is so much better than Twitter, but the reading comprehension of the user is not.
That’s apparently twitter and blueskys function.
We all need better editors.

It’s just logical.
I didn’t like Biden’s position on Gaza, but Trump’s is far worse on literally everything.
I am not a martyr, but I am clear-eyed.
