$25 million won't do much if provinces continue to dismantle their universities.

This might fly under the radar in the initial coverage of the Liberal platform, but seems relevant to the larger discussion about Canada's response to events in the United States.

The Liberals are attaching $25 million per year over the next four years to this promise.

Universities are shutting down b/c their percentage of foreign students was high

When the govt had to cap immigration & student visas due to the housing crisis their campuses emptied out

Quality Universities did not grow a foreign student business model for profit. They remain open for students

Provincial governments have capped or cut funding, and capped tuition in most cases, which left the universities reliant on foreign students. They can fix this by increasing their funding primarily. They have the power to fix this.

Would it be worth breaking it down to prefer and encourage certain fields/levels of study? I recognize that now we’re putting more value in certain programs, but… Certain programs maybe do have more value. Grad studies versus undergraduate versus diploma mill ‘colleges’ aren’t all the same fruit.

I definitely think some places may be problematic but, no, pretty much every field of inquiry has value. Not all of it is measured in $. But the dollars do mostly follow those fields that do have most obvious $value added.

Certainly, and I don’t mean to suggest ‘value’ is only pecuniary- I’m actually starting at NPSIA in the fall very much for the less tangible value. Maybe clamp down on the fraudulent storefront ‘career colleges’, increase student housing builds at/by real schools, and reassess from there?

The biggest problem was largely those strip mall colleges in Ontario who were gaming the visas, but the federal government put it on the provinces to fix that, which they haven't, of course.

Absolutely. But an emergency transfer payment, spent correctly, would help ensure the whole sector in Ontario doesn’t collapse - and we can increase domestic capacity as well as take advantage of reverse brain drain

I'm sure it would help, but employing the talent fleeing fascism in the US requires a long-term commitment. We need to deal, not only with the emergency, but also with stabilizing and strengthening our post-secondary education system.

Step 2, don't complete housing starts
Step 3, allow rents to skyrocket
Step 4, watch businesses leave because they can't attract the talent in cities that are just too expensive
Step 5, restrict $ to universities by capping tuitions
Step 6, blame the feds
