Intelligence and national security experts I've spoken to over the years regularly say the same thing.
North America has a *homegrown* extremism issue, and outside forces like Russia exploit and exacerbate these existing divisions rather than creating them in the first place.

The urge for Democrats to blame what’s going on in this country on an outside force like Russia instead of examining that it is an all American fascist movement that is working with external fascists because they have similar goals is extremely dangerous and shuts down our ability to counter it

P.Boys are on Canada's terrorist list.
The losers of the civil war never left and believe they were never wrong.
Those "outside forces" (really just more and bigger actors in the international fascist movement) are providing support to homegrown fascists. It isn't about exacerbating divisions it is about supporting their ideological allies.
I’ve read that some in the military have tried to counter this, but pushback from Congress stops them from rooting out extremism in the ranks.
