I will never give the full story of all the reasons I high-tailed it out of academia… but this, and the lack of acknowledgement by people with power, is on that list. Thanks for saying it, because I sure as hell was not allowed to when I was a prof.
Yes, I was trying to indicate how common this is. You will also note that while I’ve skirted around this for years this is the most direct I’ve been about it.
Couldn't agree more. My short list of useful advice to new PIs includes the idea that they should not expect any of their hires to be clones of themselves, for exactly the reasons you describe. When you do get lucky, though, you sure do appreciate it.
