-is the art to be in black and white, two color, full color?
-is the artist also doing lettering?
-is there an advance payment?
-does this artist receive royalties?
fee for both?
-is the artist also doing lettering?
no
-is there an advance payment?
yes
-does this artist receive royalties?
yes
So pay would need to cover living expenses for that whole year, NOT counting royalties. 40-60k.
This is assuming 1 page/day IS reasonable. It sounds fast to me 😅
Big Companies have paid me £12k-£16k for 100-140 B&W page graphic novels for the Middle Grade market. Both expected to be done in 3-4 months tops.
A fair rate would be triple that. Giving an artist a page day minimum with wiggle room is good. £36k-60k is a fair range to me
I'm not a writer at all.
With my business hat on, if employing someone to work on a graphic novel I'd try negotiating a profit share.
Sorry it's hit you hard
I’ll tell you what though, it’s almost definitely more than people are being paid currently.
In the US lord only knows right now.
Trying to grasp what a basic pay rate should be for people.
Then they moan about not being paid as much or as fairly as anyone else.
b&w page?
colour page?
It doesn't necessarily mean receiving a detailed script à la Alan Moore, but surely another person would be responsible for the writing/research that comes before the storyboard 😉
I think asking rate for a 200 page commitment would depend a lot on how much one liked a project and how it would feel to be in it for the long haul.
