saw someone on here say that Heat would be the best action movie of all time "if only it were a tight 93 minutes." and you know what. I'm letting myself get a little bit mad at this silly shit tonight, as a treat.

this reminds me that i haven't seen Heat in awhile.
speaking of Mann i bet the contemporaneously-derided 2006 Miami Vice is probably not actually as bad as it was seen then? (though i liked it at the time 🤷♂️)
Okay, bit of a sidebar: the VHS I was given when I was six was the now loooooong OOP* international cut, which is 160m, dubbed, and I believe the cut that won at Venice. Now, I love me the original cut, but that shorter version's the one that changed my life.
160 min Kurosawa is the international version. That’s like seeing the American cut of Once Upon A Time in America or 1900… passable, shadows of the full glory
Sorry, context. "On Cinema At The Cinema" is a film review show duo. Only one really wants to talk about the movies, neither are good critics, so it's all about the drama surrounding their film review show. Gregg loves VHS era movies and thinks he's a film buff but he has nothing to offer. 5/5
Let’s see a 90 min cut of just action and shouting and then another 90 min cut that’s all mood, vibes, and longing—like one part The Raid and the other Drive
Yeah, he was already established as a brutal, AB backstabbing sadist and a coward. Suppose we could do with a reason why the police hate him too...if that plot was ever followed up. Instead, "we got the serial killer, let's use him as bait!"
But the cops don't know he's a serial killer as well. They think he's a snitch. Neil knows he beat up Trejo and possibly raped/murdered his wife. No one but us has linked him specifically to the prostitute murders yet
Yeah those scenes are only there to make Waingro ‘more’ deserving of justice from McCauley, you could remove them entirely without any impact on the actual plot. They also do that annoying thing where it makes Hanna seem like the only detective in LA, chasing bank robbers and serial killers alike.
I am for sex scenes but admittedly Heat did prove to me I am specifically against Al Pacino sex scenes. I never ever need to see an Al Pacino sex scene.
That's the uncultured, instant-gratification wing of cinema discourse getting antsy while they wait for another Captain America flick. They wouldn't know a good film if it cooked and served them 3 solid meals a day, so pay them no heed.
It’s a brilliant exercise in overacting and under-writing. The redeeming quality was the action sequences which could’ve just as easily been played by Dolph Lundgren and ilk. And despite Pacino’s signature random yelling, the entire piece has the emotional impact of a wet moldy blanket.
This movie does not have a single wasted scene. They all drive the narrative. It builds up to the action that is necessary in the story. 10/10. Highly recommend.
I can't imagine why anyone would want to ruin one of the best heist films of all time in order to make it one of the best action films. LOL Action is great. But, cutting character to add whiz-bangs would be such a waste.
In retrospect, this comes off like a high school production where everyone is imitating the actors from the movie. They’re saying the same lines, but have none of the gravitas that Pacino & De Niro bring to the (literal) table.
I mean, most modern Shakespeare stage and especially screen productions are heavily pared down. Hamlet and Richard III are about four hours uncut. Branagh's Hamlet was notable because it was the whole thing.
True. Most of my experience with Shakespeare is literary. Read more than I’ve seen. A really good example of your point would be Joel Coen’s Tragedy of MacBeth.
I still imagine what Neil’s life could’ve been like if he hadn’t turned around to go kill Waingro. But at the same time, he couldn’t have any peace knowing he was still out there…the bank robbery scene = best shootout scene EVER. Phenomenal film just as it is.
Heart-wrenching 💔
Honestly, I would love to see the 93 minute version of Heat. Kind of a throwback to the classic noir era. I’d like to see Mann do that. But that wouldn’t be as a replacement for the current version. Modern, longer, more intricate and involved are their own thing.
The ONLY thing that should be cut is the Al Pacino sex scene. I never ever need to see an Al Pacino sex scene, not even in one of the greatest movies ever!

ICYDK we've a cottage industry churning out endless retellings of the same group of 80s and 90s gangsters, 3 of whom got shot in a field.
