Here are the stats of the damage spells - so anything that attacks creature toughness. The new trend to make the big red spell as close to unconditional removal continues and I for one love it. No 4 damage spell on other hand is interesting. I had to put the 4 dmg sweeper instead.

But in order. X/1 hate is there, in limited capacity but still. With current rate on creatures and removal that slot is now ofter completely gone. -1/-1 on Spray makes it a valid combat trick and 1 mana Cycling helps to make it useful at any stage of the game, despite not so many targets. 3/14

Only two things that deal with X/2s early (don't mix up with Extus - that one has 4 toughness) And only one of them at instant speed and at uncommon and hopefully used for more pricy things. This means your main defence against early threats should be your own creatures.

At 3 the ole' reliable Lightning Strike - bound to be one of the top commons in the set. But the other card, Scrap Compactor could be decent in some decks where it supports synergies. Killing ~60% of creatures for 3 and anything for 6 is not amazing but flexibility + synergy could make it OK.

I like compactor a lot in blue decks trying to power out the Gearseeker Serpents, which I think is a strategy open to any base blue deck so long as you get the serpents.

No dedicated 4 dmg spell. This can have interesting implications for X/4 utility creatures that rarely go into combat. Here are 4 of the ones I selected - you will have to use premium removal to kill those or spend a ton of mana, so if the effect they provide is good - they may overachieve.

Ok, I know we named every creature with 4 toughness, but I actually was thinking the black common one could be better than expected. It could be a better Vampire Spawn, given that they have to spend unconditional removal on it and it has already drained 1 life.

5 damage removal slot has two bangers. Only 16 creatures in the set can survive this and 3 mana is not a lot. Sorcery speed on OO is a bummer, but the extra ping sweeten the deal. You likely get ahead on mana, but unlike the rest of removal, it will be hard to nab a vehicle with this one.
