Did a week long digital detox and given the amount of info overload and stress so many of us are under because of it I can’t recommend it enough. Scaling back does not mean checking out, the whole world still exists offline.

Mental health is the key to staying in the fight. So when you feel overwhelmed. Then it's always best to take some time to recover.
Hope you're feeling better Sarah. We are together ❤️
I do the same, but I found that I still needed to keep in touch with current events. Bluesky's custom feeds feature allows us to do and stay away from the toxicity or even our own who might be overwhelming my feed with despair and anger.
I'm also going to experiment with getting a dumb phone.
Yes. Folks might think their social media and other digital addictions aren't a big deal. But go off it for a week, and the moment you go back online you'll clearly see what it's doing to you. I like what Cal Newport says about doing a 30 day digital detox.
Agreed. I took FB and insta off my phone and really just need to save down pics so I can delete them. I started Bluesky just so I feel part of a community. I took LinkedIn off my phone because it’s depressing. I deleted news widgets off my phone. I get @HeatherCoxRichardson daily and that’s it.
Yeah, I take frequent social media breaks but I still watch the news. I feel like the only way I can control my intake sometimes is tuning out of social media
IF I watch anything it is carefully curated from a streaming service sans advertisements (they're also being used to not so discretely push the degener47es agenda, in case no one noticed).
Put an OOO on my email that explained what a digital detox is and just didn’t post on social or open news apps for a week. I don’t think I missed anything important and I had way more energy for organizing in community with folks. And I slept better.
Oh I also was annoying and used a “cellphone sleeping bag” so that my phone wasn’t next to me/my bed all the time and I had to be more intentional about retrieving it and removing it from its sleep when needed. Screen time dropped precipitously.
Deleting my twitter long before bluesky existed was the best thing I ever did, especially after the pandemic. It gives your brain space to relate to the world better, examine questions differently and with more nuance and complexity.
It’s just any bag lol. My partner was making fun of me for calling it that because it’s not literally a miniature sleeping bag. Just a non clear bag (I used a cloth gift bag) you can cinch or tie shut so you don’t *see* your phone, but can still be carried with you if need be.
Yes I very much did not get it at REI but that would be cute. I found that I left my phone in my bag or in the other room far more often because it’s a physical reminder to stop and assess how important picking it up is. And it totally kept me from scrolling in bed.
