I think they mean the search engine rather than browser - unless it's the mobile browser. You can log in to your google account from any browser, whether it's Firefox or DDG mobile. (If you're using Android, you'll be logged in already.)
Sorry, I’m not a tech expert. I just read some article from tech journalists. I suggest doing a search for any questions you have. You will likely find articles with answers and other google alternatives to try. Maybe you can’t switch everything but even one thing, like not using search, is a start.
Apparently Proton has been doing some major backpedaling saying the CEO did not endorse Trump, just the Republican nominee for antitrust, & the company is not controlled by any one person but by the nonprofit Proton Foundation, which has neutrality in its governing principles.
It is for me. Firefox also seems like a good alternative to chrome because it gives you much more control in the settings and lets you turn all the tracking and data stuff off.
Theres also better email services than Gmail that aren't reading your communications. Proton has has a free option that meets the needs of many, perhaps most, personal users. Very secure. MS & Apple both have a free email service, Outlook, iCloud Mail.
NO Microsoft - also part of the evil empire and Outlook has a PATHETIC HISTORY
Wow - never recommend that piece of shit. Look up its history of security problems. It has been banned in the past from a number of governments for internal use for that reason
Me neither! I read some articles about google and chrome alternatives, tried DuckDuckGo, liked it, and decided to spread the word! I also like Firefox because it lets you turn all the bad stuff off in settings, but I decided to keep the post focused.
But this is DuckDuckGo's core engine, so my point is: why wouldn't you begin to PUSH one of the rare browsers that is also a leading development power.
Firefox has grown to be fucking amazing, I gotta get into 35+ tabs before noticing a hit, and even then, it's usually a poorly written page loaded
I made this post using a free design app on my phone called Canva. It’s very easy. If you have info about other google alternatives make a post and get it going. I’m not a tech expert just a concerned citizen who was looking for an easy alt to google and found one that worked for me.
Windows is abandoning support for 10 and I have 2 machines affected. They don't meet the specs for 11, work fine for my purposes, so was planning on trying Linux again. I tried Qubes a few years ago. Bit of a curve.
So long as you're using MalwareBytes and/or a decent anti-virus, you're ok
They're not going to be making feature updates either, but if you're already good with the features you are now using... you should not have much to be concerned about as you continue to use machines that are suiting you now
Their newest releases, since about 2022, leave me searching for a new distro. For now, XFCE desktop under Debian serves my needs well, but I have 20+ years experience in Linux so I can also see how other desktops are more Windows-familiar.
I have to use both as I can't expect common businesses to switch to MS when they are just regular folk who don't have the resources or time to educate themselves or workers to advantage Linux - and they fear loss of personal support if something happens to me.
I stopped using Gmail for every day email years ago for this very reason. Started using what at the time was .Mac, not iCloud. Apple isn't perfect but going for less evil. Lately, I've really consider just setting up my own email server.
You can also consider using a secure browser like Firefox or Brave instead of Chrome. DuckDuckGo also has a secure browser built on Firefox. It will break some sites, but you can consider that a failed security test. It also has a neat built in youtube player that strips out the ads.
Sorry I’m not a tech expert, just a concerned citizen. Try using DuckDuckGo to search for alternatives! I’m sure you’ll find some articles and lists on sites like wired. That’s how I found out about DuckDuckGo as a google alternative in the first place. 👍
For navigation, I've been using Sygic lately, and heard Tomtom and HERE are solid as well. For local maps I've been testing https://mapy.cz which is good functionally, just missing some content (review, etc) outside Central Europe, but that's up to us.
I tried to do this last night, misread but retaged the Gulf of Mexico in Google maps. Then I did this thing. But I wonder if all of us retag the Gulf of Mexico Google maps will just default to that
How ridiculous that anywhere else in the WORLD, if you were to look at a map of the world right now, you will see “Gulf of Mexico” and the ONLY people who see anything different is Americans….how embarrassing.
The oceanic bay south of America and East of Mexico is THE Gulf of Mexico. Always has been, always WILL be... Leaving Google now because they're MAGA...
Feedback: This body of water has been called the Gulf of Mexico since 1550. That a fly-by-night felon has decided nearly 500 yrs later he wants it called something else is on par with demanding a hurricane follow the path of his Sharpie. Some day his enablers will regret being complicit to fascism.🤬
Great job except that DDG is still American owned. Try European owned Ecosia that PLANTS TREES based on more usage. Just learned of it, did a bit of research and plan to switch
Nobody’s perfect 🤣. A few people have mentioned Ecosia. I like the trees thing. Will check it out. My main goal was just to get average ppl (like me) to reconsider google products as a default wherever they can. I tried DDG and liked it. Didn’t think of the American part. Thanks.
No idea! Sorry, I’m not a tech expert. Just a regular person who read some articles about alternatives, tried DuckDuckGo and liked it. I suggest just searching what you’re looking to replace and find some articles from reputable tech outlets like wired. That’s what I did.
Last I heard, this was his go-to app for SMS. I don’t believe that WhatsApp is end to end encrypted unless the other end is WhatsApp. 🤨 Zuckerberg cannot/should not be trusted.
Just remember, YOU (& your sensitive information) are the real "commodity."
You can turn off tracking and AI in the settings. If you don’t like it try finding some articles from reputable tech outlets with suggestions for alternatives. There seem to be plenty of options.
Oh, there's still tracking. Data is sold to Bing and Yahoo though anonymized but still sold. Also, there's still tracking when you click on a link and there's a DNS look up to get the website. This request would go to a third party provide, google, your ISP, and so on.
Not a techie. But my understanding is no. Seems like Firefox is a good bet as it allows you turn off tracking and things in settings. I suggest doing a search for what you’re looking to change and you will find articles from reputable tech outlets with pros and cons from experts. That’s what I did.
Been using Firefox Focus for a few years now. In some situations the original page will NOT display in FF because the whole point is to track you and get information. In thise moments, if I really need to see a given page, I will use DDG or Brave. If all else fails & I still need access, I'll use G.
The way it was explained to me was Apple products are excellent for privacy from everyone except Apple and their associates. Also get that invasive AI creep and Siri related surveillance.
Bitwarden can. It can even be self-hosted if you're extra concerned, but its default cloud-based saving is still plenty safe and available on all platforms 🗿
Ok. This kinda blew up. Good! Got some feedback re “no AI”. Yes, there is AI, but you can turn it off. I simplified for the sake of brevity. Also after posting apple changed their map and DDG is showing the change. I removed the map bullet and tweaked the no AI language. Not a techie, just a person!
For driving, I’ve switched to Sygic, though Tomtom and HERE are strong contenders. For local maps I’ve started using https://mapy.cz which is very precise and full of features. What it misses most is user content (reviews) outside Central Europe.
I don't know if I'd want to switch. I mostly use it for image search but I still remember searching for something about COVID during the pandemic and the top results were all fake news and conspiracy theories.
Ive read Firefox is good because you can turn tracking and data stuff off in the settings. I suggest doing a search for alternatives and you will find articles from reputable tech outlets with suggestions.
I have the MyVegas slot games that are tied to Facebook to save my comp points. You get real comp points for the MLife casinos. Free rooms, meals, shows, cruises. 200,000 points for a free room. I have over 7million points. Have tried to switch but can’t. So, I still have Facebook but don’t use it.
Moving to DuckDuckGo and have used Foxfire for years. Will drop Google as soon as I can figure out how to save my 180,000 photos, memes, and videos on Google Photos/ Cloud!!
Also this subreddit is proving to be exceptionally useful for those who want to give any and all Google services a wave goodbye, and a middle finger on the way out
I’m just going to keep using Bing. So far it would appear that MS has not waded into the political fray, and it’s still “Gulf of Mexico” in their map app.
Been using since not long after it launched, for all of the reasons you’ve listed, (plus must admit the flame action to clear and close all tabs is pretty cool….🙂)
The flame rules 🔥. I’m not a techie, so I was just using the same old apps I’ve been using for years. Then they started doing some brazenly evil shit and I started searching for alternatives. I think a lot of people might need that same wake up call and start looking at tech companies differently.

Take it from a pro
Firefox has grown to be fucking amazing, I gotta get into 35+ tabs before noticing a hit, and even then, it's usually a poorly written page loaded
I use a Fedora distro with a great windows like interface
They're not going to be making feature updates either, but if you're already good with the features you are now using... you should not have much to be concerned about as you continue to use machines that are suiting you now

Linux newbies who are accustomed to Windows should definitely use Linux Mint.
Experienced Linux users have plenty of distros to choose from.
BTW I’ve read that Brave search engine is even more private than DDG, but don’t know who makes it.

Firefox just added A.I. too I hate this slop future I might have to redownload waterfox ugh
It uses its OWN technology not the engine of the evil empire
I love the search engine DuckDuckGo - but its browser is based on tech built by the evil ones, an engine known as 'Blink'
https://Mozilla.org for Firefox
Duck Duck Go does have ads. That is the only way to support itself since it does not sell data.
Duck Duck Go has an AI search option at the top of all question results to find one consolidated answer.

DuckDuckGo has been trash for years now, and it's only getting worse.
There really aren't any good options any more because the well has been thoroughly poisoned

Nice artwork, Mike! Did you create it
Cool, I like them. I have a graphic designer friend who used to work at The NY Times who uses Canva.
#DemVoice1 is looking for artists to join our Bluesky team. We have Foxy and another. It’s pretty informal.
