What @bsky.app needs is a clearer verification process for organisations and media. Strongly suspect that is what is stopping those big beasts coming here - but if that is provided I can totally see this App eclipsing Twitter for good.

There is already a verification process but I think it needs incentivising via some sort of optional graphic for verified accounts/domains as it’s too easy to miss at the moment.

X vérification was non existent.

I guess sometime being less obvious helps. But I do feel organisation, policy units and media should be verified. Individuals have fear. Many of reprisals. Having anonymity is important in this case.

That only proves you have access to the e-mail address you used to set up your user. It doesn't verify that your user is who you say it is.

In fact the only way you can do this for individuals is to have a manual check by the Bsky team or force people to use their real names and have an eID system and that will be tough to do in many countries.

The domain system is only useful for domains the rest of us already know. I am using my own domain but it is not registered by someone called NVGG and my screen name could be Otto English or Alice Cooper if I chose. It verifies nothing except whoever registered https://nvgg.online allows me to use it.

It already exists via domains.
That doesn’t seem to be well known though, so public figures aren’t all doing it and users aren’t always checking.
Perhaps Bluesky needs to publicise it (with help from users) rather than build something new.

Big organisations can use their domain name as their handle. That would act as the best verification.
For example Labour could use @labour.org.uk and MPs could be set up as @name.labour.org.uk

It's fine for organisations we know but useless for individuals. Even if Stephen King has a domain called https://StephenKing.com it probably isn't registered by that name and anyone could create SKingAuthor or something and most people wouldn't notice. The pre-scam blue tick on X worked.

You can see my user is a domain. What does it tell you about me? Nothing at all really and if you search the DNS records all you'll just see is an unrelated guy owns the domain.

The key was when I said "big organisations" and the example of the Labour party. Likewise if there's an account for customer services at McDonalds which is at a McDonald's domain it's a good verification.
Let's face it no one cares about where you or I are the genuine article I'm afraid.

No, I get that it works for large organisations that we already know. It is useless for individuals especially those that don't use their real names like actors and authors. You might know Mark Hamil's domain but I don't.

Absolutely this. I’ve followed several accounts which could be placeholders for a migration, or could be fake. Many don’t have any posts yet.

Because it's an open platform, they are using the domain method, which means the actual big companies have control over who they issue handles to. If the organization has an IT department, it will be easy for them to get custom domain handles.

Not just for them but for all users.
Ways need to be found to somehow stop anonymous accounts, trolls, and bots.
Freedom of speech can only function properly this way.
I can see that verified folk for security reasons prefer to stay anonymous, and that can be done via their handle.

They just need to use their website as their username, that has to be verified (with a DNS record I assume like Microsoft, Google etc). That can't be faked.

It will depend. If the extreme right are happy playing in their sewer it will be fine for the sane to stay here but if they start to migrate to this platform they will drag it down to their level.

I have done this with my vanity domain. You have to add a TXT record to your DNS thingy so it proves it's your domain. I'm not sure what it proves really though because I don't know the domain name used by A. N. Personality - do you? So anyone could set up a plausible domain and use that.

I rather assume that Bluesky does that check and would make it clear on my posts and account that the domain name is wrong. But it's only the domain they can check, isn't it? There's nothing in my DNS record to say it is me. I think I could still claim to be President Biden or such.

Well to be honest I'm not sure either! The method is useful in many circumstances. The White House (to continue my example) could set up verification for their well-known domain and then President Biden using that domain you could trust is true because you know that's the right domain.

How did Twitter verify the great and the good? was it automated?

Bluesky has lots of users but no means of generating revenue. There are only 20 staff, apparently- so engineering resources would be an issue. They’ve got their hands full keeping the thing afloat.
