Yet they had been at 22-25 percent in polling (btw polling in Germany still works), so they lost a little. Maybe because of massive rallys against the far right.
No. They get things counted on time. Germany isn't as large as the US. This is pretty much the result. Scholz (SPD and currently in power) has congratulated Merz and the CDU.
Compare with last year's UK General Elextion exit polls vs final results. Essentially the overall results are known the moment polls close. Not every country operates elections as the US does.
So long as the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) doesn't agree to a coalition with AfD, everything should be fine. SPD (Socialist Democratic Union) bowed out gracefully). The German government doesn't work like the US system. Don't see this as some sign. It's not. Merkel came from CDU.
Christian Social Union. It's Bavarian. They formed a political alliance with CDU which is based in the north. Bavaria is in the south (German Alps). Bavaria is a traditional more conservative area. It is largely Catholic. Munich (largest city in Bavaria) is where Hitler had his Beer Hall Putsch.
I’m not German or American, so I’m silly to even try. But why not be silly? Hard to compare a European multi-party system to US two-party system. Vance and Musk did support AfD, and they increased share of vote, but less than many expected. Very unlikely to end up as part of ruling coalition.
In U.S. terms: A bunch of parties that aren't on the U.S. pol. spectrum got about 25%. 😉
AfD wasn't going to win cause most Germans still have some decency. Conservatives ruled out a coalition, but tried very hard to win far-right voters over in the last weeks, even …
… bringing a very anti-immigrant resolution to the floor of parliament and voting with AfD. Didn't win them any far-right voters, as predicted by about every politics and history scholar. Lost them about 5% in the polls.
But the far-right pulled the Overton window to the right over the last decade. Even the Greens (grudgingly) approved an anti-immigrant course of the EU. So the far-right has been winning, in a way.
Not silly of you to ask the question. But I hope my reply isn’t wildly off base. Based on exit polls, we know the AfD aren’t largest party. Once count is finished, the coalition building happens. But seems unlikely that CDU Conservatives will include far-right AfD in a deal.
CDU/CSU plus SDP will be sufficient for that so long as FDP (whose withdrawal from the Scholz government caused the early election) and BSW stay under the 5% threshold for Bundestag representation.
We get 93% plus in Australia. That’s compulsory voting, easy access to voting, no voter ID and democracy sausages for you. I’ll leave the sausages for you to research 😁😁
Still ADF gained no ground. And he turned Merz into a massive anti American in one week after JD Vance spoke.
Europe fully hates America.
So does Canada, Mexico , Panama , Greenland etc etc.
Amazing for one months work.
We need this kind of choice. I bet Trump would have gotten maybe 20% of the vote if we had Harris maybe Sanders and a Newsom/Pritzker/Basheer situation. Guess there woulda been a DeSantis crashing out for 6% too.
Really? Where were you when the American Rescue Plan lifted 49% of American kids living in poverty above that line? Those policies would have become permanent if Build Back Better had passed entirely instead of piecemeal.
Both parties aren’t the same. One takes orders from Vlad.
The Ds try but they're not the same. The Rs will do whatever to get what they want and the Ds are worried about appearing too socialist to MFers who will never vote blue. Democratic economic plans are far superior, the people delivering the messages don't even have the backing of "liberal" media.
The last sentence of your comment 🎯 Being retired I have the luxury of time to read for news including foreign sources. There are no doubts we have a putin problem. And we have a Christian Nationalists problem which isn’t restricted to southern red states.
Unfortunately, they gained the most votes than any other party since the election in Sept. 2021. We’ll see what the final
result is, but they’ve almost doubled their votes. Not sure how many more seats they’ll get.

Also, didn’t Vance and Musk want AfD to win?
My second question was the answer I was actually looking for. I was trying to figure out if the fascist got into power.
Some of the responses I read seemed to suggest they did.

We are required by law to register where we live, and we get an invitation letter for every election.
