Idk if it’s American, but I use the smart page search engine on Firefox or librewolf browsers.
The ad situation is no longer an issue, and it only takes a couple extra seconds to look at the entries since it doesn’t have an AI bringing up an immediate answer.
I probs will never go back.
Yandex, but I thing they use the usual google/bing for search, and gets a lot of russian language results.. there’s a Chinese one but there’s also this language difficulty, since I can’t read Russian or Chinese
I use qwant, a friend of mine uses ecosia - both pass traffic through to bing but are a) better than bing or Google off shelf and b) working together to build their own search index. https://blog.ecosia.org/eusp/
you'll see the target ads immediately. plus google is reading your location, mapping to others whom are in the same places and identifying your family, coworkers, etc... they can track you via them. it's incredibly sophisticated. frankly, I've given up.
This is a tough question. Easy answers are Startpage (Dutch) and Qwant (French), but they rely on Google and Bing respectively for results. Qwant is co-developing their own index with Ecosia though, so I get the impression that their reliance on Microsoft is waning. Both are fairly private, though.
Most of the alternatives listed here like Startpage or Qwant still use Google or Bing on the backend, though they are more privacy-friendly by anonymizing the data sent to Google/Microsoft. The only one with their own search index I know of is UK-based Mojeek.

As far as integrity, they still score high, and the app stays on guard stopping 3rd party nonsense.
That said, I also use Brave. They index everything themselves. It kind of shows.
