I am lucky to have moved last year to a little town with a fabulous library. A mile away, it’s truly a stunning building and has an enormous selection.
My current library is beautiful too. But, it’s open & contemporary. The neighborhood I grew up in, old Aurora, when it became a majority-minority neighborhood, effing Aurora, CO shut it down. That is a sign of systemic racism!
Free book loans, cheap book sales, study rooms, community events, park passes, access to computers, a place for all members of our community to spend time (housed and unhoused), and the list quite literally goes on. Defend your local library! 📚🛡️
And with a library card you can if you wish get a FREE Libby and Hoopla app so you can (from your phone or ipad) borrow books, magazines AND audiobooks. Free.
This post has given me life this morning! As a librarian it is so awesome to see how many people love their libraries! Please use that love to advocate for your local library! Budgets are right, freedom is being quashed. We need your voices to keep doing the work we do!
i do pay for mine bc i go out of county instead of to my local branch, i can’t get to the books i want to browse at my local branch without using stairs which i can’t always do. but i still keep a card there just in case!
they are, but i want the ability to browse like everyone else. that’s frustration with the building. i do have other issues w that library bc they just don’t have a lot of stuff i enjoy reading, it has to do w the way they’re funded tho
that isn’t saying “don’t go to your library” or “most libraries are like this,” i just have more specific complaints and understanding of how systems work bc both my parents are librarians, or have been in the recent past, both have an MLIS. i *fucking love* libraries as a whole.
that’s just it, they ARE, it’s a loophole. they don’t have to have an elevator bc not enough floors, and their wheelchair lift doesn’t have to go to the platform i want to look at bc it’s one section and they can get stuff for me. but i still can’t look at the books *i* want
i also *can* access the bathroom in the children’s area, but the lift doesn’t go there, so i have to leave the building, go around it, and go in the other entrance to pee (or look at kids books). still ada compliant… just really sucks!
And you can order a book, you might get it in a few weeks, and then other people will also get to read it. Some times slow is better than depending on Amazon delivery and all that comes with that.
Support your librarians and teachers. Show up to any book challenges at public library or school board meetings and let the mouthy minority know they aren’t the boss of us📚
Only because of Libby. Our small town library is mostly Ronald Reagan biographies and Billy Graham books. There’s nothing punk at all about those guys.
Sacramento lbrary card gets you FREE New York Times 3 day subscription that can be renewed every 3 days. Go to the media page, there's also magazines & other newspapers.
I renewed mine recently and was able to get some things on Libby. I do enjoy going to the library and looking around with a coffee! Also getting to take home physical books just feels great. 📚
My library system has teamed up with a local nonprofit that supplies us with period products and diapers. Public libraries are more than books, they are a community safety nets that need support more than ever in the USA!
then you can get audiobooks, ebooks, movies, tv shows, other digital recourses using Libby, hoopla, kanopy, and other apps that are through your library card. These apps also count towards your libraries numbers and boosts their funding!
I would say the idea of taking power of information away from the social media/chatgpt/sensationalist media and getting vetted (by publishers granted) materials that by and large the current establishments don’t want you to have.
Yep! And with all these streaming services raising their prices (looking at you @netflix.com)
I’ll be exploring my library’s video resources more and saving tons of money!
in the philly area, it gets you $2 passes to a ton of museums too 💗 library cards rule. jersey libraries have a ton of free passes to places including the wildlife refuge
I found out that I could get 1 from Philly if you live anywhere in the state, but I never thought there'd be more perks to it! Might plan a trip out there this year!!!
yes!! i have like 4 different people cards in mine rn and i give mine out to my friends & it's been working great. i love getting to choose a place with a shorter waiting list or better availability
We have this.

I’ve got one. Still can’t believe the closest library in my county is almost an hour away. In my home state of MA I was always within 15 minutes of one.
Gonna be honest - I never thought I’d see a day where libraries and librarians would be praised as being punk AF - this is great. I’ve discovered punk at an older age than normal and appreciate its message.
Download #StoryGraph & ditch META's Goodreads. It even let's you import all your info from Goodreads (do it on a desktop though, I couldn't figure out where it saved to on my phone). 😅
Thanks for the tip. And I just recently sent a message to goodreads saying I was not going to use them because they made it too difficult to log in using an older computer. I had not realized Meta had acquired them.
Ours has a Thing Library, so we check out things like tents, telescopes, tools, fruit pickers, and karaoke machines, etc. Ask your library, there are grants for starting a tool library in some states.
And don’t forget if you have a library card your library might offer additional services on their website. Mine includes access to research databases, Udemy (through gale), local archives, and job boards.
🤓 technically it’s not free because you pay for it with taxes, but since I’m a good citizen and I enjoy putting taxes back into my community I’m not a dumb bitch about it.
My 5 year old son & I are on a mission to go visit all 27 public libraries in the county we live in. We checked out 13 books today....all telling stories from different cultural lens. Some explain different holidays. I feel so helpless but this at least feels like I am doing something.
What??? I am a librarian and our system has an app but we still give everyone cards! That is sucking the joy out of getting your card. What about the kiddos getting their first card? I love seeing their faces when they sign their name and get their card ❤️
I just got my third library card in Columbus yesterday. They have different systems here which then allows you to put more on reserve because they each have limits. I like to get in the queue early on blu-rays on order so I get them right when they come out. Our libraries even have video games.
The Queer Liberation Library is a way to get a free library card to a library from anywhere (US) that curates authors and stories with trans, enby, aro, ace etc voices! Wait times are often long, but even so, worth it! And a way to find awesome, worthwhile authors I'd never have heard of otherwise 💜
When I moved to a small town it had never occured to me that a town would vote against libraries. But here we are. I pay $40/year for a district library pass, worth it.
Wish it was here in Grants Pass Oregon. $60 for a card. The librarian was shocked as I started to walk out and she told me I could get on a charity wait list. The look I gave her woulda peeled paint.
You are right, and we live 2 miles from town. This is still bullshit. I never paid for any California library card. Oregonians will not pay taxes for ANYTHING. You have to pay for fire service in Josephine County to a private company. Guess my lifetime in Cali spoiled me with common sense.
Hell yeah! I use https://Amazon.com as my card catalog. Then this FREE browser extension finds it at my local library. I walk the dogs and grab the book! Free books from the library compliments of the 'zon! PAF! PUNK AS FUCK! And by punk I mean Ska beause that's my favorite. LFG!
Many libraries have Libraries of Things. You can borrow sewing machines, tools, exercise equipment, party supplies like smoke machine or disco balls… check it out!
We ended up having to pay $40 per year for access to our library, but it's because it's not in our county. The closest one to us is in the next county over. However, 100% worth it. Libby is great, and our library even has free passes to things like the Zoo and Aquarium!
Whoa!! Strippers are way more honorable and dignified than you know who. Don't denigrate a stripper! There is no comparing the two. One is working and paying taxes. The other cheats and never pays taxes. One entertains and shares beauty in dance. The other strips everyone's pocket then dances away.

And yeah, it ain't a lot, but it's not money I can afford to spend .
Your local library may do the same !!
Public Libraries are special and are meant to be utilized! Support them any way possible!
I’ll be exploring my library’s video resources more and saving tons of money!
I've taught classes there and it's great
Trading in my no imagination for new, free imagination
