unsurprising imo. double loaded corridors, massive underground parking etc are the rules almost everywhere in the country. any city with a strong enough economy is going to be constrained, some just hit it earlier

This is it. The second red states start running out of room in reasonable commuting distances of a metro center, the population booms will stop. Texas and Arizona probably have awhile to go; Florida, Georgia, Carolinas, etc., might be maxing out soon. They're not YIMBY, they're just late starters.

Of the top 10 largest cities in red states, 9 permit more homes than Los Angeles, while all not having as severe a housing crisis. Red states haven't figured out 'the secret', but they are certainly not just LA but sprawling.

They also have the benefit of looking at how LA failed and making reforms now. If these cities are currently just 'LA in the past', many are changing so they won't become 'LA now' in 20-40 years.

True, especially Nashville. They also are starting from a much less dense starting point on average.

But we can also look at how many 5+ unit buildings they built and it's still pretty good.

South FL's peak share of the state's population was in 1970, it's been losing ground to Central and SW FL steadily ever since (a not insignificant contributor to the state's political trends)

the other urban areas aren't too different, Pinellas (St. Pete) also peaked in 1970, Hillsborough (Tampa) in 1930 and Duval (Jax) in 1920. Orlando is the exception
