I honestly think they must’ve just read comics for the power fantasy. If that is all you’re interested in, then you can be swayed into admiring how Lex Luthor and Red Skull wield their respective “powers”.
I remember going to San Diego one year and being pretty surprised by all the Negans in attendance… kind of breaks your heart as a comics fan, especially.
(Those are propaganda characters. Liberal patriotic propaganda, yes, but still written to instill in readers a sense of an "American spirit" that is ultimately good. But the line between patriotism and nationalism is artificial, so some people will come out the other end full on fascists.)
