Zone 5b IL. I've always planted Memorial Day. Last frost is mostly start of May, but we can still get nuked with a late one. This year, I am going to start mid-March, transplant mid-May. Heirloom tomatoes did spectacularly last year so bumping things up a bit. I started hot peppers yesterday.

I won't start my tomatoes until the first week of April, but I am planting in zone 5B in Central Ontario so can't get them in the ground safely before June 1

Look at your garden hardiness zone, if you have that information. Then look at the plant label/pack for date of maturity/harvest. Count backwards to know when to plant outside and inside. Starting seeds too early means having to re-pot or stunted seedlings, but too late means burning in the summer.

It depends on where you live and other factors. I live in USDA zone 6. I start my tomatoes 5 weeks before my transplant date, inside, with grow lights. I won't sow tomato seeds until the second week in April. I grow onions and shallots from seed. I sowed those in mid-January.

I normally start mine around now with heat and lights, but this year I’m away at the end of March so they’ll be going in early April and I’ll see if they catch up. I grow mine outside (once it’s warm enough)

Definitely waiting until March. The folklore around here is anything before St. Patrick's Day is just sure to get encouraged by our false Spring and then zapped by Frost. Traditional last frost date is April 15, who knows what it will be this year 🤷‍♀️

I wait to start tomatoes till the end of March. I put onion sets out as soon as the ground can be worked. I'm in Northern Michigan , zone 5a.

Some start their tomatoes the same time as eggplants and peppers. I wait until mid march for sowing in the house.
